Shotgun barrel cleaning

I've been using Frog Lube to clean both my semi-auto pistol and shotgun, it works well except for one problem; cost.

This product is great for a pistol but when cleaning the 28" barrel of my Benelli Supersport, it gets pretty expensive due to the sheer amount of metal involved.

What do you guys use to clean the barrel of your shotgun? I've been thinking perhaps I should switch to Ballistol. It comes in an areosol spray can and should make life a little easier as I can spray it down the barrel and soak it. Might also be easier to clean out the ports on the barrel as I can spray on the ports directly.

Or perhaps WD40 might work? Just spray into the barrel, let is soak, then scrub, clean and apply a layer of oil.

Why not just use old fashioned Hoppe's? The good thing about shotguns is you're not trying to clean casing metal (copper) out of the rifling. Hoppe's is cheap, trusted and readily available...

Granted, it's not as faddish as some of the other products out there but it's awesome.

I've been using Mpro7 on everything for a while now and its been good to me.

general cleaning of parts, the action, etc: CLP

when I need to clean the bore: Hoppes or Shooter's Choice.

Shotguns are more about carbon and plastic as the shot or slug is encased in the wad.

I spray carb or brake cleaner down the barrel and then use hoppes on a simple tornado brush.

You can also wrap a patch around the brush


You just don't get the lead fowling in the shotgun due to the wad

Finish a cleaned gun with a lightly oiled patch.

While the barrel is still warm, usually done in the parking lot, I spray MPro down the barrel after each shoot and run a snake thru it 2x-3x. Rarely do I oil the barrel (to each their own) since I usually don't go w/o shooting for more than 2 weeks (3 tops).

I do try to oil the rails before each shoot however.

About every 4-6 weeks I clean out the action and break down the carrier group.

I use hoppes and rem oil.

I use a brush and scrub the barrel. Then wad half a paper towel (make sure it's a tight fit) and jam it through and so on till clean

One quick question for those using M-Pro 7:
I've noticed on Amazon.com that there are 2 products related to cleaning:

2. M-Pro 7 Gun Cleaner, 4 Ounce Spray Bottle

I have both but rarely use the gel on my shotty. Trust me on this, the gunk comes off pretty easily with a spray of [insert favorite cleaner] while the barrel is still warm. Run a snake through it, it's got a lot of surface space, a couple of times and your barrel is GTG.

If you let it sit, it'll take more effort and stronger products.

Lastly, breakdown and buy the gallon jug off amazon

Ballistol works wonders. Changed over from hopped and never looked back bought 6 cans to stock up. Spray down the barrel let it soak for a few minutes and run a bore snake through it once or twice and continue on with life.

Hoppes #9 with a brass brush, a couple of paper-towel patches to get the heavy stuff out, followed by a mop and Rem Oil. Takes less than 5 minutes.

Thanks for the great tip! I'll bring my cleaners and a bore snake next time I'm at the trap range. And yes, I typically break the shotgun down and bring it home for cleaning, and the barrel takes forever to clean. I'll try to do it next time with it still warm. Hopefully makes my life easier.

My biggest issue for has been the plastic build up from the wad. I use shooters choice shotgun and choke cleaner.
