    Smith and Wesson 916-T

Anyone have any experience with this old shotgun? It doesn't seem to have been very popular but it was free. I'm looking to make it my next project. It has a very long 30" barrel but looking to re-barrel it to a shorter 20" for self defense. Anyone try that?

Anyone? I found a barrel on gun broker for $40 looks like a pretty easy swap

I don't think there were many around, so that might be why you have a lack of responses. I've only seen one, and it was at the Chino Hills Turners. I was gonna buy it to round out my S&W collection, but Josh or what ever that managers name was being a d***, so I passed and left. Luckily I got a 3000 about for day later for the same price.

How much was it going for? Part of me wants to fix it up. Part of me wants to get something else. I'd like to change the damaged stock to black synthetic bit there is zero aftermarket for it

          Bingo.

I had a 916 a long time ago. It's an okay shotgun, I guess. If I still had it I'd shoot it, but I'd be hesitant to throw much money at it. As far as pump shotguns go, it's nothing noteworthy or special. As a practical gun, I'd rather have a 500/590/870...

I think I'll put the short barrel on and a $30 stock from Numrich. $70... not bad for a free shotgun

I put the short barrel on it. It actually has a better finish on it then the original. Was easy and looks much better!

These were made for S&W by Noble, and had a weak locking system, and other parts prone to breakage. S&W dumped Noble because of this, and went to Howa to have them make a Rem 870 clone they called the 1000P Pump.
That was picked up by Mossberg for a couple of years after S&W got out of the shotgun business in the late 80's, then Mossberg dropped it too. Sad, because it was a better made gun than the Rem 870 and the Mossy 500.
I wouldn't advise a steady diet of heavy loads for it.
