HD Rem 870 light suggestion

looking for some suggestions...I have a 870 (police magnum) 18.5" barrel with wood furniture, in really good shape. Just picked up a Vang Comp 2 shot mag extension and CDM Mod-C light mount/barrel clamp. The Vang Comp mag extension is solid....I really like it so far, no problems feeding and fits the 2 extra shells no problem. The extension is so solid it probably doesn't even need to barrel clamp, but I wanted to be able to mount a light as well. I didn't want to spend hundreds on a whole new stock set (like the surefire with built in light). The dilemma I am running into is this:
with the light mounted on the left hand side, I am able to push the rear button with my weak hand thumb and it works fine. But, I would also like a sling on the gun, and the light on the left prevents a forward sling mount from attaching to the mag tube.
I did get a remote tape switch for the light (primary arms light/switch) so I can flip the light to the right hand side and then put the switch on the fore end on the right and tap it with my finger tips.....but I can't figure out a good way to attach the switch to the fore end (wood) I tried adhesive velcro, which stuck the the wood no problem but slid right off the rubber switch....
any ideas? or should I just go sling-less? I got a 3 point for it because I read a lot of people were chewing up their strong hand on the aftermarket single point attachments that fit behind the receiver in front of the stock, like GG&G.... any other single point options?

Barrel clamps for magazine tube extensions are usually there to just support the base of the extension because without it you would risk shearing the extension off at the threads if you were to bang it against something.

As for the light, get a Surefire or go home.

Jk....you can try going with a single point sling setup, or get a different forend that can accept a rail and just mount the light on there.

If you talk to Hans Vang he will tell you not to run a clamp with his magazine extension.

I use a Daniel Defense sling plate between my receiver and stock and my hand has never been affected by it, and I shoot to crap out of that particular shotgun.

Since you aren't open to replacing your forend, there is another option.

You can get a rail section that clamps around the mag extension, the downside to this is you have to remove the clamp whenever you want to strip the rifle or open the magazine.

Checkout the Magpul forward sling mount. If you could mount a shorter flashlight as far back as possible on the CDM Mod-C light mount, there should have enough 'length' left on the barrel/mag-tube for the Magpul forward sling mount. It might block the light path a little bit, yet shouldn't be too bad.



As for sling... unless there are specific reasons to use one for home defense; a sling could potentially tangle or interfere with furniture/fixtures/etc. inside the home, especially in low-light or tight-space situation.

Though, I do have slings (with 'quick-release mounts' setup) on a couple of my shotguns --- mainly the sling is for all-day trainings/classes, so I could rest my shotgun on my chest when necessary. Yet when back at home, I usually KISS and detach the sling from my shotgun.

I hate to say it but surefire is the way to go. They are expensive but for good reason. No ackward hand holds, goofy buttons with remote switches on bungee cables. Everything is self contained and right where you need it in a simple, solid package. 2-300 dollars is cheap when it comes to you or your loved ones safety. The opportunity to properly ID somebody under stress is priceless. As much as I hated to part with my money for one, it is really the only way to go IMO... Too much is at stake when it comes to home defense to skimp out on something so fundamental as a light.

As for a sling, for HD I prefer not to have a sling. If I were to get one, it would be a single point. A 2-3 point can too easily get in the way of manipulating the shotgun. Pulling the trigger is the easy part. Reloading and switching loads gets messy really easy under stress and a sling can only complicate it. It can also limit your ability to use it as a blunt weapon if needed.

Also be careful on how the sling mounts. A lot of those extension tube/barrel clamps put stress on the tube. They will put a torqueing pressure on the mag extension since it is just clamping force that keeps it on. Granted it will take quite a bit of force but the best ones mount off where the factory cap was.

You can occasionally find used Surefire 618FA's (the incandescent version) for around $175 shipped if you look around. Then leave it as-is or upgrade the bulb or housing head to an LED unit if you want.

Definitely get an LED. The incan bulbs are a weak point and can fail.

Almost all long guns should have a sling or the ability to accept one in my opinion. I say almost because certain long guns have no reason to be slung, such as some expensive clay and bird guns, bench rest rifles, etc.

On my 20" 870 Police I went with a Nordic +3 extension with their mag clamp. Noveske makes a qd sling adapter specifically for the Nordic Mag clamp. I installed a pair of Grov Tech QD flush cups on both sides of the stock 1" from the butt plate and 1"from the top of the comb. This allows the Ares Armor Sling to be used the same as my rifles, providing support and staying out of the way.
Using a qd sling system IMHO is smart because the sling can be removed or installed very quickly and with the correct mounts are very low profile.

The Nordic Mag Clamp can also have a small section of rail added to it on either side so a flash light can be added.

Yep, that's why I decided against putting a sling on mine. It's something that can snag or be grabbed by a perp. It's not like you're taking this gun out into the field anyway. Even if you do at some point for camping or hiking you could always just put one on it before you go out, I suppose...

I'd go with a Surefire fore end for the light.

I was told never attached anything to the mag extension tube. They are not meant to take serious abuse. They are meant for range competition. I was shown this at a shotgun course when a fellow student came with one and had a Tac-light clamped to it. The Instructor told him he would pay for the damage he was about to cause, the Student agreed. The Instructor slammed the light into the door way. The impact tweeked the mag extension bad. It would have fallen off after a bit of use after that. We were told only clamp a light to the actual mag tube & barrel or the forearm.

Surefire LED because the LED circuitry is designed for extreme abuse. Other LED's circuit boards are just designed to hold and power the LED.

I bought the GG&G single point and I like it.

How to mount is up to you, but I really like most of the Fenix lineup for their lights. All of the TK series are awesome lights. They take a lot of abuse for a great price.
