    Benelli m4 question

Hi. Found an out of state m4 tactical with factory Stock collapsible and factory extended ,7+1 tube as reported by private seller. Seller states it is 922r compliant and Calif legal. Question: How can I be sure it meets 922r and Calif legal ? Sounds like a LE version being sold by private person. Need advice on this item. Thanks. BTW, I am in Calif.

Need pictures, but as it stands right now "assault weapon" by California terminology because of the collapsible stock (which we can assume isn't pinn'd or fixed)

The stock needs to be pinned and all the mag components need to be US made and I believe one piece tube

For CA, all that's needed is a pinned stock. All else is fine as long as the mag tube holds under 10 rounds.

I think this might be tricky.

Did the Benelli M4 come from the factory with the extended mag tube, or was that an aftermarket "extension"? If the gun is bone stock from the factory like that, completely unaltered, then all you would need to do is to pin the stock.

If any component has been changed/modified ("aftermarket"), then you will need to make sure that a minimum of 3 components are American made. Here's a link to the list of "qualifiable" components:

Seller states it was factory for extended tube and adjustable stock. Qn: once pinned, Can it be adjusted to fit properly or is this a pinned permanent wrt in calif usage?

Pinned permanently, which with the Benelli M4 isn't obviously easy.

You are probably better off buying it without the stock and putting a factory fixed stock on it or an Urbino stock.

It's good to be up on the 922r stuff, but no one will come breaking down your door to ensure you are compliant, so you can afford to get the shotgun in hand to figure out what needs to be done. The collapsing stock is another story. Fix that, one way or the other.

As what others have stated, the extending stock needs to be fixed (pinned in place to prevent it from extending/collapsing).

                  FYI.
Fed 922r compliance is on the maker/importer/seller and not on the buyer.

Exactly, I don't know why individual owners who are not maker/importers/commercial sellers worry about 922r. It's your gun, you modify if you want for personal/non-commercial use, no need to count parts.

Exactly. 922r is a federal regulation and of no concern to CA. The retractable stock is a CA issue so if it's pinned, it's good to go. There's not "AW" issue with the M4 since it has no removable magazine. If the mag tube holds under 10 rounds, and it meets the legal standard on length, buy it.

Keep reading. You aren't assembling a weapon, you're just modifying it. Additionally, arguably all shotguns can be used for a sporting purpose. Just take it to a skeet range. Can't hit any thing? Must be having a bad day.
