Semi-auto loading methond you use?

When view videos of people loading their semi-auto shotguns, I typically see people using this method:
1. With the bolt open, drop a shell into the ejection port.
2. Hit the bolt release button to chamber the 1st shell.
3. Insert the rest of the shells into the magazine.

I'm using a Benelli by the way.

My shotgun manual illustrated 2 different methods however:
Method A.
1. Pull bolt back while holding bolt release button to cock hammer.
2. With bolt closed, insert shells into magazine until full.
3. Pull bolt back and hold it open, insert shell into barrel via eject port.
4. Release bolt to push shell into chamber.

Method B.
Same as Method A except at step 3, pull bolt back to open and hold, then press the cartridge drop level to deposit shell into carrier. Release bolt to push shell into chamber. And then top up magazine with 1 shell.


Are there any advantages/disadvantages to the 3 method above? Thanks.

Depends where im at, if i have a pocket full and on the line ill put one in the chamber turn the saftey on then load the magazine tube, if im reloading my gun by the car (BLM) i just put them in the tube, hold an extra in my hand go to the line chamber a round then add the extra into the mag

If you hunt non birds with the platform then load the chamber. There is another thread about a fisherman and a bear. You want it ready to shoot so loading the chamber is a good first step.

When shooting clays you will leave the gun empty. So what ever works as it is an administrative loading.

So for hunting or home defense a loaded chamber makes it a gun and not a club

I think the OP is asking whether the benelli has any special features that other semi autos don't have.

Once I get empty, the bolt is open.


Shooting right handed, and held at the shoulder, I load one in the chamber, with the left hand from over the top of the gun and hit the release button.

I want one ready to go.


The flip the gun upside down and load two at a time, in four pushes using this...

Yeah, I'm a software engineer used to reading codes and I found it difficult to read. I wonder which genius designed the manual.

And the worst part is, they did not document the part about the magazine plug! When I was test loading the shotgun, I found out I could not load more than 2 shells in the magazine. And for a while I thought I had a busted gun, read the manual again and didn't find anything. Luckily I also frequent shotgunworld.com and someone there mentioned the magazine plug and how to remove it.

Thanks for the info guys, the ghost loading thing is interesting. I'll try it out at the range and maybe use it when the shotgun is put on standby for home protection duty.

Not all sg's are capable of ghost loading. Just a heads up

^^^This - SoCal agrees with NorCal There are some things you can and can't do between the M2, M4 and SuperSport (especially the latter since it was designed primarily to break clays and not for tactical / HD usage - but you can if you like).

BigBear.....go to a tactical shotgun class. As you've discovered, figuring it out by yourself can be frustrating and is usually more costly over the long run.

not sure if ghost loading will work for my things but i prefer getting the chamber loaded first then the tube

Ghost loading doesn't work with all benelli's. If you don't kill the intruder with the first 5-6 shots do you really need a 7th?


Best thing you can do is take a class of some sorts and shoot that gun a ton so you can work it without even having to think about it.
