Diggin' my new mossberg 500

just picked her up yesterday from big 5, it was the 500 combo. initial reaction upon cleaning her up and fondling her a bit was VERY positive.

i've already got an 870, with the 18.5 barrel, mag extension and mesa tactical urbino stock. right from the get-go, i could believe the difference in weight between the 500 and the 870. i know the 870 has the mag extension, steel receiver, and the hefty mesa tactical stock... but the mossy feels like literally half the weight of the 870. EXCELLENT point-ability. my wife tried her out for size and she was thrilled about manipulating a shotgun and not having her arms get tired.

action on the 500 is smooth, smoother than the 870 action when brand new. cycled a few shells and dummy rounds through her, and the action also feels lighter than my 870.

870 trigger is much more crisp than the 500, but this aint a rifle, so i can deal. trigger weight is fine, but i'll have to see if i can rectify the mushy feeling at some point later on.

all-in-all, VERY happy with my purchase, and would probably get another mossberg shotgun when the right price comes along again. can't wait to get out and disintegrate some clays with her...

Love Mossberg shotguns. Time for you to find one with the nice Marine Coat.

The slide release is what made me move from Remington to Mossberg. It's position behind the trigger guard as opposed to in front seems like it should be a no brainer..

congrats. the combo with extra barrel gives the Mossberg 500 great versatility at a very reasonable price of admission.

the light weight of the Mossberg 500 gives it an edge as a SHTF shotgun and it is competent as a defense weapon any day of the week.

despite my preference for the old 870, i've always held the Mossberg 500 in high regard. i've owned a few, and will probably pick up an older example sometime in the future.

didnt even think about the slide release, either position works well for me. the position of the safety on the mossberg is very intuitive, i like it a lot. especially since i will keep a traditional style stock on it (possibly the magpul sga when they release it). my 870 has the urbino stock with a pistol grip, so the 870 safety position is perfect for that setup.

you are right, this gun is gonna be part of my bug-out kit, along with a 14.5 AR and springfield xd... all lightweight and reliable. really, still cant get over how much lighter this thing feels in comparison to my 870! first time out, i will definitely find out if increased mass does indeed mitigate recoil... i'll do a side-by-side comparison between the 870 and 500.

I don't know why, but I love Mossberg 500s. I just bought my third on Thursday. This one is an ATP, which used to be the police model.

I just won a 500C on Thursday from Gunbroker. I guess I will have that in hand in a few weeks. In doing my research the same pluses kept coming up about the 500 series. Easy to carry, slide button behind the trigger, safety on top of the receiver and easy, "no trapped fingers" loading.

The lighter weight will however translate into more felt recoil. But you can offset that some with a lighter load, say 3/4 ounce.

While doing my research, I found a few mentions that the Big 5 Combo package was not the same as the Mossberg Combo. It was mentioned several times that the Big 5 package either did not have have chokes or that the chokes were permanent. Did you look into that at all?

yeah, i knew coming into it that the chokes were not interchangeable. not into hunting yet, so hopefully not a big deal for now. wanted something fun to shoot some clays and serve as possible HD... two birds, one stone. and a rather inexpensive stone at that!
