    Mossberg 500 or...

I couldn't really figure out a decent place to put this so i'm putting it here. I can't seem to decide if I should get a mossberg 500 or a ruger 10/22 which i will later put an archangel kit on. It would be my first gun but I am not new to guns I go shooting at the range a lot and have friends with firearms. For primary use it is going to be for recreation as in for the range. If I get the 10/22 it will be used on the lanes and for plinking and for the mossberg 500 it will be for trap and some lane time but it wouldn't be as fun for that unless I just used sluggs. What are your opinions on what I should get first i wont be buying another until I get my motorcycle so it will be a little while.

Get both. Seriously. Save up a little. You won't regret it.

The last thing I'd do with a perfectly good 10-22 would be put an archangel kit on it. But, getting a .22lr of any kind would be easier on your budget than a shotgun. But, both are good started guns.

If you get the Mossy, go with the combo that comes with both short and long barrels. I got mine on sale at Big 5, couldn't be happier.

Most people are going to shoot a 10/22 a lot more then a shotgun.

I'd use the money you plan on using for the archangel kit and buy the 500.

I started with two 22 rifles.

But once I got my shotgun I haven't even thought of shooting them as I love shooting clays so much!

The cost of the guns is just a small part of the equation.

Shooting clays cost about $15 per round (for the targets and shot shells) which is 25 shots. You'll easily spend $60 each visit to the range, even if you are a member and don't pay range fees.

Shooting 22 is almost free at 5 to 10 cents per shot.

Get the 590 not the 500.

I got a 590, and the downside is that you can't swap barrels.
It would be nice to swap out from home defense barrel,
to skeet barrel, to slug barrel, with the same gun.
None of the other barrels fit on the 590.
(But you do get the extra ammo capacity...)

Get the mossberg. You can use is at the range and for home defense.

one potential is to buy one outright and put the other on extended layaway. they're both very good selections.

if budget is a consideration while you're saving for your motorcycle, pick up the 10/22 and leave it in it's factory configuration. the cost of the gun is the price of admission; the other costs begin shortly thereafter.

Downside to the 500 is the magazine capacity is limited (unless you can find one of the few models with a magazine extension pre-installed or send it off for some very expensive machining.)

So I guess it comes down to what it will be used for.

To me that is one advantage the 870 has over the 500. If you decide at any point to turn into into strickly an HD gun, you can. If you decide one day you'd rather ditch the magazine extension, you can do that too. With the 500, there is no adding an extension tube.

Where do you plan on going to shoot? If you only have access to an indoor range near you, I would go with the Ruger 10/22. That way you'll be able to shoot a lot more often and for pretty cheap too.

If you actually plan on shooting trap more, go with the Mossberg 500.

You could always pick up a Marlin 795 for about $150, I got mine from turners for $120 when they had their sale a few weeks ago.

I actually have all 3, the 10/22, the 795, and the mossberg 500. They're all great guns. You cant go wrong with any of those for your first gun, but definitely consider what you'll be using it for and go from there.

Start with the 10-22 it's more affordable to shoot. Take an Appleseed class for a weekend and it will run you including ammo around $120 and you will learn your basic rifle marksmanship skills. With the 10-22 being so affordable to shoot you will get the motorcycle sooner and then the Moss 500. Please hold off on spending money on the archangel kit. Just get some tech sights and a usgi sling (google liberty training rifle).

Both a shotgun and a 22 LR are part of just about any firearms collection. After that, you will eventually flush out your collection with a center fire rifle and a pistol. Add one or two more firearms and you are quite set to do just about anything you want to do. At the end of the day, it's your skill you learn by practice and classes that is the most important. Hardware and caliber is a distant second.
RIP Louis Awerbuck. I miss you and your training.

10/22 first, then low cost, (Mossy) shotgun.
                              Do some basic research.
