Best AR style stock for Mossberg 500?

Greetings,

So after buying a pistol grip only stock for my mossberg 500 not too long ago, I have determined that while it is easier to store and put away, I've found that it generally speaking makes me quite a poor shot. And although I've always gravitated towards a traditional stock for shotguns, I have made the choice to try one last option before I just switch back to the original stock.

And as such, I was thinking of purchasing a collapsible AR style stock as it fits almost all requirements which I am looking for, mainly being the following.

1) I would be able shoulder and properly aim down the sights (or bead sight?) in order to be more proficient and accurate should the need ever come.

2) Be able to collapse for a shorter LOP as I have short arms and I feel that with most traditional stocks I find myself reaching awkwardly sideways when trying to get a proper cheek weld. I also want it to be as short as possible as I already have the 20" barrel 8-shot model which in itself is kinda long.

3) Be all things I have mentioned while not burning a hole in my wallet.

So with all this being said do you guys know what would be the best stock like I've mentioned for between $50-100??

So far I've looked at the blackhawk specops gen2 (felt good, but heard poor reviews), ATI Talon (feels cheap), and phoenix technologies AR 6 position stock. I would greatly appriciate any and all advice and references that you guys have to offer. Thanks in advance.

I have a Blackhawk SpecOps Gen II recoil reduction stock. I like it, and it does the job to really reducing the recoil. It does need a little practice to shoulder it right without cheek slap; yet once we get used to it, it works as advertised.

Just for your information, Blackhawk also makes a NRS version (non recoil reducton) of the SpecOps stock. It is lighter, and no worry on cheek slap. I have one, and I love it.

And if you could save up and pony up, eventually get the Mesa Tactical telescoping stock. I have shot my friend's alot, and in my opinion it was one of the best (if not already the best) AR style stocks for 870/500, and was worth its price (it is also available with optional recoil reduction, using hydraulic assembly.)

I have an ATI Talon set up on my 590 A1, and it runs great with full magnum loads. The stock has a slight wiggle, but has held up just fine over month of abuse. The pistol grip is great, the molded gel/padding ATI uses really helps to mitigate 3" buck loads. The bonus slingplate and "padded" cheek riser are nice as well.

Only downside for me has been that the stock has to be removed for field stripping/cleaning.

I think I really like this one since it only needs a little practice to become more efficient. Do you have specific price here?

I assume it means the SpecOps? Lately I only saw the SpecOps Gen I stocks on sale -- Amazon is a nice place to browse (especially if we have Amazon Prime account -- free quick shipping.) I did a quick check there, the Gen I NRS (non recoil reduction version) is around $60-ish, and the Gen I recoil reduction version is around $120-ish.

And as for the Mesa Tactical, last time I checked its catalog -- the Mossberg 500 version (LEO version, not High-Tube) telescoping stock was around $195 retail (part #93180 -- without hydraulic recoil) and around $330 retail (part #93220 -- with hydraulic recoil), repectively.

Yeah I have actually held and handled the blackhawk stock too, I have just heard that there is a heck of a cheek slap that it has. Moreover, while I am moving towards the blackhawk, I don't really care for the whole recoil reducing stock. I am more just trying to find something that conforms to my body and to me as a shooter overall.

As of now, my only problem is that I was hoping to spend no more than $100 and now that turners sale is over, I can't find anywhere that has them in stock for anywhere under $135-ish.

P.S the Mesa tactical stocks are beautiful, however I personally don't think I could get over the buyers remorse of buying a stock for more than I paid for my shotgun which it will accompany. In other words, if I was buying a $250 part for a $1500 rifle then I would have no problem. Lol call me cheap i guess

Yeah I also was able to handle a shotgun this weekend which had the ATI stock and I must say that I wasn't impressed. I mean I suppose I have to give it the benefit of the doubt being that I never actually shot the gun, but I just felt that from the pictures I have seen that I was mislead into thinking that the grip was rubberized instead of smooth plastic.

Makes me think of how I wish hogue would make an AR style stock for the M500 and give it a similar grip to their hogue tamer.

Unless your dead set on haveing an AR style stock, I'd suggest going with a SpeedFeed PG stock. This model is their shortened Tactical stock. It has a 13" LOP, pretty much like a fully collapsed AR stock. I had one on my 590, but swapped it for a traditional straight stock because I did not like the way it made getting to the safety harder.

Not sure which stock you picked up, but my Talon has the Scorpion Recoil System integrated into it and makes for a nice, squishy grip (it is NOT hard plastic) and does seem to help some with recoil.

Not sure which stock you picked up, but my Talon has the Scorpion Recoil System integrated into it and makes for a nice, squishy grip (it is NOT hard plastic) and does seem to help some with recoil.

Go handle an 870 with the new Magpul stock. You may want to wait for the 500 version to come out. I certainly am.

Pros:

• I like the Scorpion grip system as it does seem to dampen recoil a bit. It also makes the grip "tacky" which reduces the chance of grip slippage.
• The stock goes straight back instead of angled slightly down which allows for better use of an optic (I have a reflex sight on mine).

Cons:

• Have to take the stock apart to disassemble/clean the shotgun.
• Mossberg safety is not convenient on a pg shotgun; I store mine 8 in the tube, none in the chamber, and safety off because of this (at 2am and half asleep its easier to chamber a round then fumble with a badly-positioned safety).
