How long can a mag tube extend past the muzzle?

How long can a mag tube extend past the muzzle and still be funtionally practical?

I was watching TV and someone had a 3gun semi-auto with about 20in barrel and a mag tube that looked like it extended another 8in past the muzzle even with a choke on it. Would the spread of the shot pellets out of the barrel damage the mag tube if it extended that far past the muzzle?

    As far as you want.

It's up to you to determine what's practical for you.

Yeah, those 3 guns guys could go through a 9 round tube in one go around.

The shot will NEVER hit any commercially available mag tube. But it will certainly get powder residue on it!

On my Salient M2 Benelli, I run a 10 shell tube with a 22" barrel. Sticks out about 4.5". Not an issue. I have seen open shooters with even longer tubes.
The spread of pellets is still very tight and I have never heard of anyone damaging their mag tube. Only when they abandon the shotgun in a barrel, one needs to be kind of gentle with it, I set mine in not throw it in .It does get dirty.

I have a 10rd tube on a 21" barrel and the tube gets pretty heavily carbon'd but there is no damage.

          Thanks guys.

Can it be any commercially available magazine extension like a Choate? Or does it need to be something heavy duty like a Nordic Components?

I like Nordic. What gun do you have? Use the band clamp.

Shot spread is ~1" per yard, so in theory a magazine extension could stick out ~2' past the muzzle before you run into the problem of shooting your own extension. That being said, a shotgun would be ridiculously long with a magazine tube extended 2' past the muzzle.

As far as the extension makeup, if you are planning to run it past the muzzle, I would go with something heavy duty and make sure that you run a magazine clamp to the barrel for support.

+1 on the Nordic. That is the one I use for my 10 shot tube.
As others have said make sure you use the magazine clamp.
But be aware that if you sight in for slugs and reattach the mag tube clamp, it can change the point of impact some.
