Remington 870 is the only gun I know of with a rifled barrel, you would usually either buy a smooth bore barrel and get the rifled one as an accessory or vice versa..

Excuse my question if it sounds a bit slow, but what projectile do you plan on firing w your rifled 12 GA shotgun?

There's plenty of ammo manufacturers that make rifled slugs for smooth bore barrels thses days.

Not really understanding your question here...

Your thread title is 12ga for sporting clays, trap..?

You don't want to use a rifled bore when shooting trap loads. The rifling will get all jacked up by the pellets. Use a smoothbore barrel for shooting clays.

The only ammo you are supposed to shoot out of a rifled shotgun barrel are sabot slugs. Sabot slugs out of a rifled barrel basically turn your shotgun into a .72 cal rifle, you could use that sort of set-up for hunting medium and big game, but never for shooting clays.

Having said that, a Remington 870 and Mossberg 500 will both accept smoothbore and rifled barrels. I am biased in favor of a Mossberg because i like the location of the controls, but you should try both and a few other models and see what feels good to you.

FYI, All trap ranges have rules regarding ammunition. #7.5, 8 & 9 shot ONLY allowed. Three Dram limit.... Some ranges also have a limit on the barrel length. I suggest you get a shotgun you can change chokes on. San Francisco uses non lead shot only. Stoeger makes a Dedicated Trap gun for around $600. A Condor Competition, 12ga, 5 extended chokes, 30" ported barrels & adjustable comb. They are made in Brazil, a bit heavy. For the price they are an excellent buy. A comparable Beretta, or Browning would cost $3,000. But you can't compare a Stoeger to a Beretta or Browning!

Yep, rifled bore is not for trap/ clay shooting. Smooth bore, w/ crew in chokes ideally. The least expensive 28" smooth more with screw in choke I got was a Maverick 88.

thank you all. i want the rifled to use for target and perhaps game later on. i like the versatility of two barrels. i like the sabots (sound cool anyway) and like my first time shooting clays.

In California a rifled shotgun is useless. Spend the extra money you would spend on another barrel and get a better gun. Keep the barrel between 26-28" if picking a pump or semi auto. For trap I would go with an over under or semi.
