    First Shotgun for Trap

I was at my gun club today. Someone suggested a 20 gauge, Remington 1187. I found one locally. Is that a good choice?

    Personally, I would go with a 12 ga - Mossberg 500 is a standby.

20 gage for trap is a fun thing to do BUT if you are serious about it then 12 gage, that 11-87 will make a good skeet and sporting clays gun. I've shot trap with my Beretta 20 gage 390 sporting clays gun it does make you a little sharper knowing your a tad shy on shot shooting 7/8 oz.

-just want to check and make sure you are talking about getting a gun especially for trap and not a gun for shooting clays in general.

Many people say trap when they are including trap, skeet and sporting clays.

            12 ga for trap.
11-87 or 1100 are fine and good for introduction. They are multi-use.
If it is for clays in general 20 ga might work well.

Why is 20ga ok for clays in general but 12ga for trap? Is it because clays are going away from you in trap?

I would recommend a 12 gauge for all clay sports not to mention a heavier payload of shot for those birds that are a little farther out or are crossing at high velocities.

                  No. Not a good choice.

As a beginner, you want a 12ga because there is no reason to handicap yourself when trying to learn.

A 12ga Remington 1187 or 1100 would not be my first choice for a clay gun but depending on your budget, it would be OK.

My recommendation is always an O/U - Beretta or Browning.

Lots of BS so far. For informal shooting a 20 GA will be fine.

And an 1187 is a good gun.

Thanks! Got the 12 gauge 1187. In jail now.

Go to Walmart and buy what's on sale.

I buy at the trap club where we shoot. It is cheaper than Wallyworld.

Something to keep in mind... If you want to shoot Doubles, Wobble or Skeet a pump is useless. So I suggest a double barrel, O/U or S/S. They are less problematic than the semiautomatics. Semi autos have less recoil but they are ejecting shells all over the place. Some semi autos don't cycle well with light loads.
