I've had heat shields, I don't think you need them.

Pump 20 bird shot rounds thru the 870 in a minute or two and then get back to me on the heat shield debate.

Heat shields have been installed on combat shotguns decades before the coined phrase, 'Mall Ninja'.

Looks like a good set-up to me.

I really dig it... and yeah the heat shields do help a bit when you're handling it and goofing off in the desert (in a reasonably safe manner, of course).

Thanks guys. First time I ever was burned by a firearm was with this 870 after putting around 30 rounds of 00 buckshot through it. Heat shield was installed the next week.

The gun has good balance, definitely my go-to gun

Heat shields on military shotguns were there because the gun could be fitted with a bayonet for close-in trench work to protect the hands from burning on hot barrels---looking cool is not on the list...

                  More on the Heat Shield

Clobber a trench BG with a very hot shotgun barrel and see how easy it is to deform the barrel. M1919s, while not a shotgun, non the less are equipped with a heat shield and they don't have a bayonet lug.

The heat shield is there to protect the barrel, not to protect the user's hands. Heat shields on shotguns quickly get every bit as hot as the barrel. Shotgun heat shields are made and designed for protecting the barrel and not for cooling the barrel with airflow. But they do look cool.

                    Even heat shields get hot.

No more burned hands, even after 75 rounds in 5 minutes of shooting a wicked ironman stage...

I have also owned and used the M-69 railed forearm like yours and used one of my insight WML on it...no good. With every shot the switches would punch your knuckles and you would need band aids after. If your intention is to add a weapons light (which most of us would agree is a good thing) then the surefire 618 dedicated forearm is the way to go. Otherwise one of the many standard forearms would work fine. I would even take the longer OEM Remington stock forearm with a shorter side saddle so your support hand grip doesn't have to be as long, assuming you aren't long armed.

Are you intending on keeping the OEM stock? It will do the job of course. For about $100 the Knoxx collapsable/pistol grip stock is an excellent stock with recoil reducing features.

I have been using pump shotguns for over 45 years and have never had to grab a barrel nor ever burned by one on any weapon. I can't even think of a reason you guys have to grab the barrel. Guess you guys shoot different then some of us and need that on your weapon. This is always an interesting debate and I have yet heard a single logical reason for it. Don't want to get burned by a hot barrel on any weapon? Then don't touch the barrel.

If you're going to a gun fight, take a shotgun. If you can't take a shotgun, don't go.

It happens mostly on semi-autos if you roll the gun upside down to grab 5-6 shells off your belt and reload.
The further forward you hold the gun with your support hand, the easier it is to control it and get it quickly back up on target.
With the gun rolled over and your support hand holding it near the forend, the barrel is right there in the palm of your hand.
The better way is to never flip the gun over and just grab 4 shells and load from underneath of course...
