I shot at MnM's (SoCal) Big Bonanza Fun Shoot this past Sunday, and not sure if it was the heat or Dove season, but only 100 shooters (it's been about 150) showed up for this one.

By late morning (10:30am-ish), a couple guys showed up in camo and said there was nothing (no doves) out there. An old timer remarked, the doves are hunkered down in this heat (and humidity) just like everybody else. I guess no one sent the doves the memo that they were suppose to be out there in this heat.

I did - Was in the field from before sunrise, to after sunset. Ended up with two birds and a big jackrabbit. Had to do some 4x4ing and lots of hiking just to find the birds we did. It was tiring and the take was very small, but was still a fun day. Hadn't shot my little 20g SxS in almost a year and had to get used to taking the safety off and remembering the 2nd trigger, but at least I didn't have to shoot much lol.

If there's one thing that did piss me off, it was all the trash some numbnuts leave behind (whether they're hunters/dirtbikers/whooever)...I saw everything from hulls and cans, to a discarded plastic boat.

Went out and did an afternoon hunt on the opener. Brought home 5. Lost a few in the river. didnt have a dog =(

A few buddies that hit the morning hunt limited in less than two/three hours. Im not talking one or two friends... About 10-15 of them got into the draw and nailed limits...

Went out to Imperial Valley as well; ton's of people out there.

I looked at the surrounding areas and only took back 3. Not much action out there if you're trying to get away from the fields. Didn't help that I lost a couple in the brush.

Saw a ton of them in the Nipomo Foothills.

I went with my dad, but it was just us, so we couldn't keep the birds moving.

I took my 13 year old for his first hunt. I haven't hunted in 31 years. I know, what's wrong with me but life went one way and I went the other. The boy wanted to try hunting so he took his hunter saftey course and off we went to the San Jancinto Wildlife Area near Perris Lake on Sunday morning.

I bagged a cottontail rabbit just after sunrise and a dove just after that. My son got a couple of rounds off but no birds to show for his effort. He is an excellent shot with a rifle but to his surprise, it is much harder to hit a fast moving target.

He finally got his first and only bird as three headed straight at us. We stayed low until they were up close and the boy let off a round. Funny because I thought that he would take the bird closest to him on the left but instead he shot the one to the far right, the same one that I shot just a split second after he shot. Funny but it was too late to hold my fire but just as I did I noticed my bird fold up as my son hit him. Then I hit him again.

Brought home a total of 5 dove and 1 rabbit. I don't think I'm going to wait another 31 years to hunt again. I rather enjoyed it again after my little vacation. Looking into going again maybe this weekend although I'm sure that by now the dove may be a little gun shy. It still should be fun though.

Opener limited out, but took all day.
2nd Day I got 7, but the doves sure love them Mojo Decoys.
