problems extracting / stuck shells in chamber

hi calguns i have been having shells stuck in the chamber of my shotguns (yes more than one) when shooting. this normally happens when i'm racking the pump with the recoil or rapid firing the auto-loaders. maybe less when i fire then rack.

the shells are normally 7 1/2 or #8 birdshot / target loads of various brands, winchester heavy target or estate usually, sometimes even the federal loads.

this happens with the 870 express, stevens 350, 11-87 police and the 930 spx. the only gun that hasn't happened to yet is my 20 in maverick 88.

is this normal? is it the ammo or how i'm shooting? it happens quite a bit and makes me question reliability.

on the plus side i've been getting pretty quick a clearing malfunctions

That's a new one on me been shooting shotguns a long time, when you say stuck, you see where the ejector has pulled over the brass and left it in the chamber? Is the brass torn? are the chambers clean? your not shooting 3" in a gun with 2 3/4 chambers?
What does it take to remove the stuck shell?

Take a wooden dowel and some steel wool and polish your chamber.

I have found this problem with my friends 870 express. I had him clean out the black ring inside the barrel really well and the problem was relieved. The black ring is where it gets dirty the most as that is where the shell opens up and the lead and wad first make contact with the barrel and the area where the shell opens up.

This also hasn't been an issue with my Maverick 88 in 20" as well.

hi i believe the chambers are clean unless i'm not cleaning them thoroughly enough.

yes exactly like that, the shell will be left in the chamber, and one time the brass was torn, although the material on the casing didnt look like brass, more like some cheaper lighter aluminium alloy. (winchester brand i believe).

all guns have 3 in chambers. also has happend in the autoloaders as well.

usually i dump out the new shell in the loading ramp or port, grab hold of the pump and slam the buttstock into the ground.

same on the semis i clear the port, send the bolt home, eject and chamber another round.

if that doesnt work i have to take the barrel off and push a cleaning rod through.

Funny you should mention this tonight. I cleaned my Beretta tonight and noticed this black ring for the first time. I ran the snake through several times, but it stayed pretty dang dirty. It took a good 15 minutes with a brass brush and bore snake to get it cleaned right. I will pay more attention to this in the future.

I don't expect everything handed to me. Just set it down anywhere. Unknown

                Savanna

Get yourself some Remingtom 10x Bore Cleaner ( sold everywhere). Put some on a brass/ bronze brush. Run it through the barrels a few times.....let sit for 3-5 min. Then just throw cloth patches over the brush and clean dem barrels.

You will see just how much funk comes out.

Use the snake to put on coat of oil .....thats all they are good for.

That's common on new 870 express but I haven't seen it on other guns.

Go get a chamber hone and honing oil from Midway and you can polish out the chambers. Done two already with good results. You can do them in a few minutes, its faster than the wood dowel and steel wool method.

Clean chamber is different from a smooth chamber. I just wrapped 00 and 000 steel wool around a bronze brush and hook it up to my power drill with Mpro7.

Good luck but everthing being offered here should work to fix your problem.

To see full story, see this thread: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=235288 I think I may have found the issue. I was always looking "in" the chamber. Look at the surface just above the oval engraving. As that surface nears the chamber there are a lot of tool marks. Those tool marks grab the rim of the...

My 870 works flawlessly. I also did what Mossbergman suggested.
