Mossberg 590 Drop Safe?

I want to know if the Mossberg 590 is a drop safe weapon.

From what I understand LEOs have been trained to keep their shotguns in their cruiser without a round chambered for the reason that they are not drop safe. Are they still trained this way and are the newer pump shotguns like the 590 drop safe? I seen plenty of threads weather or not to keep a round chambered but after going through page after page I have yet to find a direct yes or no to my question if it is a drop safe weapon.

Nothing mechanical is really fail proof in the hands of a human. Safe, yes. Proof, no. That being said no direct knowledge of 590 per se. Being that your not likely carrying a loaded shotgun in your vehicle is it really an issue? I guess it comes down to your personal storage situation. Me, no kids. Wife is trained. Shotgun is still kept unchamberd. Takes two seconds to chamber and it sounds great in the dark. I don't trust a safety. Rather just rack and squeeze if justified.

I am not interested in cruising with a chambered shot gun in my truck This is Kalifornia. I am sure there was a test conducted somewhere along the line. I am just looking for a definitive answer if it is tested as drop safe. I know digression should always be taken into consideration for each situation such as presence of children, company, etc... I am confident with a modern handgun such as a Glock and a modern rifle like an AR being drop safe. I have always heard that pump shotguns were not. Has that changed with the more modern models like the 590?

"Drop safe" I believe is generally a term that is used regarding handguns and refers to the fact that most modern handguns have firing pin stops that will not let the firing pin move forward without the trigger being pulled, thus not allowing the firing pin to move forward by the impact of being dropped. Some older designs can fire if dropped in such a way the the inertia causes the firing pin to hit the primer with enough force to cause it to discharge. The firing pin stops are usually deactivated by a linkage connected to the trigger. Your Mossberg does not have a firing pin stop. Most shotgun safeties just block the trigger from releasing the sear, or they block the movement of the sear. I believe the Mossberg firing pin is free floating, but its not likely you can drop the shotgun from human heights in such a way that it will cause the firing pin to have enough inertia to cause it to fire. I guess if you dropped it off the roof of your house it might fire, but your not likely to do that. Personally, I do not keep a round in the chamber of the shotgun in my bedroom, and likely would not if I carried a shotgun in my car, as chambering a round takes less than a second. However, the Pistol that I CCW is a condition-1, 1911. Hope this info helps!
