I would recommend only a Mossberg 500 Combo as a first shotgun. You get two barrels (best of both worlds) for security/sporting/hunting that are as simple as a screw to change and near limitless aftermarket parts; plus they are battle tested. Don't know why anyone would pick anything else unless it was strictly for security work or home defense and you wanted max capacity. Think hard on this.Comment

If the Pawn shop 870 has shiney blued metal and walnut stocks, then I'm betting it's a Wingmaster model? If so, $350 would be a good deal if the gun is in decent shape...............
Iffen it were me and after owning a Wingmaster for the last 35 plus years, I'd jump on it as fast as I could!

Ask if they'll let you remove the barrel, to check for a shiney bore (if it's not too dirty). Also, check the choke (screw-in are a plus). If it has all that, I'd drop some cash on the counter. A shiney blued 18.5" barrel (for SD) can be easily had. The 870 after market is as large as any. If battle tested is a concern, have no worries. It's been there and done that!Comment

.
Did someone say a 300-ish Wingmaster and a shiney blued 18.5" barrel?

This is my HD shotgun. It's a 1980 Wingmaster. I have two! The other is wearing a skeet barrel. These are great shotguns. I like blasting slugs and 00 buck from this one for target practice...
Just took this picture this afternoon, before test-fitting a 2-shot mag extension and bracket. The frickin' bracket isn't quite right... so this 870 is going to continue to look this way for the time being.

The 870 is a beautiful, awesome, reliable, well built shotgun that has been used by both military and civilians since its creation.Ask if they'll let you remove the barrel, to check for a shiney bore (if it's not too dirty). Also, check the choke (screw-in are a plus). If it has all that, I'd drop some cash on the counter. A shiney blued 18.5" barrel (for SD) can be easily had. The 870 after market is as large as any. The 870 vs 500/590 debat is the same as the AK vs AR one.
Lots of firearms are in Military inventory, that doesnt mean they all passed that test. The 870 has a hard mounted ejector. This requires drilling the receiver, and either using an aftermarket rivet system to re-attach the replacement or a gun shop to repair. The 500 series shotgun was designed like the AK, everything can be done / repaired with a few hand-tools.
There are other aspects to the 870 that put it as a second choice for warfare. It actually failed the battle tests you are talking about.
All that being said, its 100% reliable for a civilian or LEO and twice as pretty as a 590.Comment
