Shotguns aren't area weapons - even with a short barrel and improved cylinder choke, you don't cover a wide area at home defense ranges. Being off by 6-12 inches is enough to miss completely in some cases, and when shooting in a hurry under stress, it's easy to be off by that much, especially with a shotgun with no shoulder stock.

Fixed it for you. A full choke would make the pattern even tighter.

+1, a lot of HD shotguns have an IC or no choke, and at across the room range, you're talking a pattern maybe the size of a softball. Which is really about as big as you'd want it... You do have to get a shotgun on target as much as you would with a rifle.

Slugs... I wouldn't recommend them for HD, they're too fond of moving once you've got them going. But for stopping power, they're hard to beat!
