Question about a 870 riot I saw today.

I've been looking for an HD pump with wood stocks and an extended mag tube for awhile now. I've found a couple locally that were so-so, but today I found an 870 express that might work out, but i wanted to ask you guys a couple questions. I think it had an 18" barrel and an extended mag tube that went just barely past the muzzle (I can't remember if it was the magnum or not).

It had sights like a rifle and the shop owner said it was an '870 riot' model. I guess they made this model for a few years. It had a park finish and it was in probably 90%-ish condition. Couple freckles and a scratch or two. Not bad.

There's 2 things I've never taken the time to truly get into, one is AR's, the other is pump shotguns. I have an AR, but I don't know how to assemble one completely, etc, etc.

    My questions are:
    - what should I look for to see if it is actually a factory 870 Riot. Such as "all the riots are magnum receivers", etc.

    - at $320, does that sound about right?

    - why does it have the rifle-like sights?

Thanks for any help you can throw my way, I'd really appreciate it.

Seems like a pretty fair deal. Google came up with this.

This shotgun has rifle sights because most HD guns are shot using either Buck or Slugs. Especially with slugs, you actually have to aim opposed to the normal way of shooting a shotgun, where you point.

Thanks. I saw that pic too and that's partly why I'm wondering what to look for in a factory original piece. That's a Wingmaster (blued) with a riot barrel/sights (parkerized). Maybe they didn't have a model that was actually called an '870 riot', I don't know.

The one I saw today looked nicer than the one in the pic and it was a newer style. I was thinking 90's. It didn't have the ribbed fore end.

      Thanks for the response.

Here is another 1980 Wingmaster Police Riot.

It looks to be blued barrel and receiver.

I believe this was just the police model of the shotgun at the time. If you google the Remington Wingmaster Police, you'll see more current models.

IMO if you can find a wing master anything in good condition under $400 get it.

For what they should have I'm not 100% sure being I haven't looked much on them.

As for the rifle sights on a shot gun tho. Rifled sights were made for slug deticated guns and converted over to smooth bore for slug shooting to be "more accurate" than the bead. I saw it more as one more cool thing to strap on your shot gun that guys justified with reasons why they "had" to have it and how it helps with normal scatter loads and what ever else they could come with. I personally don't care for rifle sights on my shotguns being there is nothing wrong wih the beed sight it self. But I agree some shot gun set ups look tacticooler with rifled sights. And some guys just prefer that for their set up nothing wrong with that. But other than looks and preference unless your shooting slugs rifled sights do not add any performance gain to your shotgun over beed.

But either way I'd take that shot gun if its in working order and just swap the barrel for a beed later or just live with it. 870s and wing masters are great shotguns

Well if anything, if you are shooting anything but slugs, it is a detriment. You don't aim a shotgun, you point it.

What did the magtube extension look like? Did it have a bayonette lug?

If it is actually a wingmaster that's a good deal. The quality of them is on par if not better than the police magnum.

are you sure its parkerized? i don't think express models come parked. its kind of a rough blueing if i remember which rusts easily. i guess depends on how old it is. a picture might help

Well in the first picture I posted, the receiver looked to be blued with a parkerized barrel.

The second looks a lot more uniform with blued everything.

It should be a Wingmaster police model. Just a variant of it.
