    Superposed Info?

    Hi Guys,

Looking at buying a Browning Superposed as my first Over Under. What are things to look out for when purchasing a Superposed?

Google salt-wood Brownings. If you buy a salt gun, make sure you either pay the right price for an unfixed one, or buy one that's been properly repaired. Then look at the lock-up, followed by the normal things you'd look at on a gun, dents, scratches, rust, grime etc.

However, unless you want a Superposed simply because it's a Superposed, look at early (or even newer) Citoris. Every bit as good, but less collector value, so you'll save a lot of cash. That and Citoris can be had with interchangeable chokes, Superposed generally cannot.

Make sure the top lever (the thing you use to open the gun) is far to the right. If is has begun the excessive use migration to the left, don't even consider.

I disagree. Just make sure the lever is centered or to the right. Even new Brownings don't have the lever "far to the right". You'll still get 10's of thousands of shots with a centered lever - then it can be rebuilt. If it is over to the left figure a cost of rebuild into the price.
Also make sure the lock-up is tight.
I agree with the salt wood comment. 1967 to 1973. You can determine year of manufacture from the Browning site. http://www.browning.com/customerserv...tail.asp?id=42

Thank you all for the help. I had been considering a 1970 trap model that I saw on gunbroker but now am reconsidering it after hearing about the salt wood issue.

Make sure that the stock is unaltered. It's not always a deal breaker, but it is harder to fit a previously altered stock that was shortened or cast on or off. But who knows, you may get lucky with an altered stock that fits perfect, not likely though.

I have three Browning Superposed. A "63" not salt wood era, a 67 and a 72. Don't let the salt wood problem stop you from considering a Browning over under. I would not part with mine. Find a reputable dealer, get a "no salt wood" guarantee if you are buying online and take it to a gunsmith or knowledgeable Browning person to inspect for salt wood. They are some of the finest over unders out there. That being said, don't even consider buying a salt gun at any price.

I don't expect everything handed to me. Just set it down anywhere. Unknown

Since you're in the east bay you might try to call Imbert and Smithers in San Carlos. They are Browning dealers and might be able to inspect the gun on arrival, if you have it shipped to them. Also get a no salt guarantee from the seller.

Might call them and see if they have one in stock with their used section.
