    Maverick 88

Picked up a Maverick 88. Claims it was bought at Just Guns in Sac. It has a single action bar. All I have seen written is ALL 88's had dual prior to the early 90's? I don't see this 88 as that old.. Its a 18.5 inch barrel and appears to be completely stock. Does any one have info on how to find out what year it is based on serial numbers?

    Any info is appreciated.

Only option I see for that is actually contacting Mossberg to check their records. As you mentioned before, all single action Maverick 88's were produced before 1990 so it is atleast 23 years old.

Inexpensive or not it is still a new toy for him and what is the harm in knowing a little more about it?

I have owned an 88 for about 15 years and it has never let me down. Great gun for the money.

I bought a Mav 88 on my 18 th birthday in 1988 and it had the single throw. I never had an issue with it for 20 plus years i only sold it because i picked up a remmy 870 police that i could extend the magazine on. So it has to be from that era.

Here's the weird part, the serial number starts with MV900

I saw one online for sale with the serial starting in MV 855 and it had two action bars.

I wonder if this one is some wall mart special deal thing like a costco brand LOL.

Either way its like new and it is not my only shotgun- it was just hard to not buy it for what I paid...

I have checked into finding the date of manufacture by the serial number for Mav 88s. As far as I can tell, it's not possible.

I just bought mine maybe 2 months ago. Maybe my receiver was made and done back in the 80's and finally put together now :P?

It's a quality gun from a good company. Mine is terrific. I sold a Chinese made Stevens I had in order to buy mine because I like American companies and their stuff.

The Winchester model 12 had a single action bar, of course they were cheap junk. Many fully reliable shot guns had a single action bar, seems that it has become a selling point, rather than a requirement for reliability. I like you jump on any good deal when it comes to guns. Never to many.
