pistol grip & adjustable stocks, which is best and why

Anyone know of a comparison done that I can read up on? I got a Moss 500A1 20". I dont like the LOP. I see ATI, Blackhawk, CAA, Mako, Tapco, Phoenix Tech. Anyone got any reviews from experience in several types?

Several factors are involved in the topic I think.

Straight up pistol grips are generally frowned upon because they are hard to control and beat you up pretty good when used.

The AR style adjustable stocks are pretty nice. They offer several adjustments but are very expensive in general.

Then for straight up LoP adjustments there are buttpads and cheek pads that can change the LoP and cheek welds. They are gernerally not over expensive and usually the easiest way to adjust LoP and check welds.

I only have experiance with AR style buttstocks and shoulder + pistol grip stocks. The AR style as stated above are prefered but pretty pricey. I also use and like the shoulderstock+ pistol grip. It's the least expensive decent way to go I think imo. 1st link is stated as above 2nd is AR style it's for a remington butt you can get one like it for the mossy..

I'm reading on shotgunworld.com right now. seems people shy away from ATI, some like the Knoxx NRS, but many are saying go with a 12" Hogue stock and dont wrap your thumb over the top.

It's a basic adjustable stock with a stock shell holder included. No recoil reduction properties or hefty price tag. So far it has treated me good, but all I was lookin for was an adjustable pistol grip stock. What sold me was the included shell holder. Just my .02.

Mesa Tactical makes the highest quality stocks of that type that I have ran across a little expensive but worth it in my opinion.

I was looking at the Mesa tactical adaptor. The whole stock set up would cost about $250 using quality parts, but you get what you pay for.

Yeah I think the term "a little expensive ' is an understatment lol. They are nice though.

As for the ATI I have used an ATI on 1 of my SGs for a couple of years including several tactical classes with no issues..Speedfeed and others offer the same type of stock though so just find one you like with the stock+ PG. They offer alot more control during discharge, manipulation and reloading.

Theres a company that makes something called a rhino rail, they also have an adapter to use any ar style stock. Could come in handy to save some cash. Sorry, i am being lazy right now

I've had the Knoxx Recoil Reducer and hated it. I couldn't get a proper check weld because the stock was too high. If you used some type of optics, it would probably be fine but I was running a simple bead. Also, it did reduce the recoil on your shoulder but then it would slap your face. I would have to look over the barrel without a proper cheek weld. I had a Mesa Tactical Urbino w/Limbsaver and Cheek Riser. Great stock but the grip was a little weird. Its got a very square/blocky pistol grip but the stock is well made and the 12" LOP was perfect. The Speedfeed IV-S Pistol Grip Stock w/13" LOP is what I'm running on my 870P. It's the best stock so far. The smaller LOP fits me perfectly and has a soft recoil pad. It's well built and tough enough to be used as a blunt object if the need arise. Best of all, it's cheaper than the Knoxx and half the price of the Mesa Tactical Urbino. For the 500, I would get a conventional stock because of the location of the safety. I had a Hogue 12" LOP on my 500 and it was too short. Choate makes one that's adjustable from 13" to 14". Magpul is coming out with their stock for the 500. It's adjustable as well and is kinda like a pistol grip and conventional stock all rolled up into one. Anyways, good luck with what your looking for and enjoy your shotgun.

I honestly like a traditional shotgun stock best...but I like a shorter length. I usually add the Hogue Tactical Length 12" LOP to 870s and 500 series shotguns. The reduced length helps me both get around corners easier and work the manual of arms a little faster. With a lot of shotguns adding the pistol grip makes working the safety or other parts of the manual or arms more difficult than if it had a normal stock. Speed when working those things matters. So I gow with what works best for me. If others do better with a different setup, then that setup is a good idea for them. Everybody is different.

I did a lot of research on the subject. Because my 590A1 is an HD shotgun and my wife and daughter needed to use it, the shotgun required a variable LOP stock. Frankly a fixed 12" was a bit too short for me. The one thing I did not want was a pistol grip, which IMO made the shotgun a bit unwieldy. I like the fact that I could simply shoulder my 590A1 swing her around, sight through the GRS and pull the trigger.

That's why I opted for the ATI Akita 4 position adjustable stock with cheek rest. It's just a simple matter of depressing the lever and making the adjustment from 12-3/8" to 14-3/8". Comes with a Scorpion Recoil Pad. ATI sells the stock/forend combo in tan, black and od. They sell JUST the stock in black. Cheapest was buying direct.

So far works fine. Long term use will determine its performance. Here it is on my 590A1.

i have a old KNOXX stock on my 590.its a range toy though, for my main HD shotgun i bought a cheep JIC II mossberg 500 kit then replaced the terrible pistol grip with the old stock that came with the 590 when i bought it. i was thinking about getting one of the choate mark 5 to replace it though because i like the feel of a pistol grip better. anyway here is the 590 in all its glory.
