Going to look at a 870 tonight. It is used and is the express model. What should I be looking at as far as problem areas? It was used for duck hunting only.

If it's an older one, nothing - unless it looks like it's been abused.
If it's a newer one, they weren't manufactured with the same "finesse" as the older ones. -

I don't know what it is about the 870 but there is always rust on the receiver. I have seen plenty very slight pitting. Some with some serious rust. Really annoying. I thing they are great shotguns but the rust pitting just makes me feel they are made cheaply/terribly.*********************

Check the function. Make sure it fires. Check the inside of the barrel for gouges. Check to see if it has a choke. If no choke, check to see if it threaded for a choke. As always, check for fit.*********************

Shop/search for a 18.5" cylinder bore barrel. Mossberg makes one for a 870 as does Remington (obviously). Frequently someone here will put one up for sale or you can shop the usual suspects - Midway, Brownells etc.

barrel
might want to look for a 20 in. barrel with rifle sights and choke tubes...just another option...cheers...Comment
