    Rem 870

    Hey guys,

First time here and shopping for a shotgun (my first) for home defense. I looked at both the Moss 500 and Rem 870 and decided on the 870. However, there seems to be alot of different variations of the 870. Big 5 has a sale on an 870 (8 shell capacity) for $319. I looked at the receiver and its stamped with Remington 870. On the other hand, the local gun shop has an 870 Express (5 shell) for $323. This model has Remington 870 Express stamped on the receiver. What is the difference between the Big 5 and local shop model besides the obvious shell capacity and stamping on the receiver? Is the Big 5 selling an older model of the 870? The big 5 seems like a better deal since I won't have to buy the higher capacity magazine if I was to buy it from the local shop. Thanks for any input.

Weird, I never knew big 5 sold the regular 870s, I thought they only sold the express models. I think for the most part the express models are a little bit rougher on the outside but as for internals they're pretty much the same. I own two 870 express shotguns, and both I bought from big5
    No complaints so far.

Is yours stamped with Remington Express on your receiver?

I'm also wondering if the demo model is stamped differently than what is in a new box. I will have to head back to Big 5 and check it tomorrow.

They're all different. some are stamped REMINGTON 870 EXPRESS MAGNUM and some are just Remington 870 and so on. Also depends on when the shot gun rolled off the factory as far as what kind of locking system they use. It seems like the recent production ones are coming with trigger locks and the older ones with the green key. It's all the same thing, good job deciding on the 870 over the 500.

Thanks! I held both the 500 and 870 a few times and the build quality seems so much better than the 500. The 870 just felt more solid. I'm sure they function the same but I just liked the feel of the 870 better. As for the trigger locks, the one I noticed on both the Big 5 and local shop version is that the trigger lock was on the back side of the trigger. I'm assuming these are the newer production models. I haven't notice the green type trigger locks on any i evaluated. I most likely will buy the Big 5 version. Its the lower cost and already comes with a higher capacity mag. I can use the extra $$ I put aside to buy the Knoxx specops and a sidesaddle. Then probably mount a surefire on it later on.

I agree, a friend of mine also has a Mossberg 500 and I have an 870. The 500 has many plastic parts. And when you dry fire the 500 you can hear plastic. I have no doubt that both will serve their purpose, but I prefer the Remington.

Remington has stopped labeling the 870 express model with the "express" on the side of the receiver. It is still the exact same firearm as the standard express.

My 870 is stamped magnum express on the receiver, bought at gun store. I remember reading some stuff on here about the differences between the walmart Rem's and the rest of the world's Rems and it struck me as curious at the time. I wouldn't put it past walmart to stick it to you but I have no idea of what the differences might be and

                      However.

Not many guns that are legal in CA are more fun than an 870. Birdshot, buckshot, slugs, sabots, blanks, highly configurable and customizable, it's a hoot. Awww SHUCKS I'm in love!!

The Big 5 website has a picture of the mossberg up for the remington 870.
Really interested if this is the one that MSRP's for $390.00

I looked it again but I forgot the number. I know its not the 5077 (it might have been 2503). Its a 12g 7+1 with 20" barrel. The SN does end with a "M" so its possible to use the magnum rounds. Also, I verified that it does only say Remington 870 on the receiver. I was set on this model but I really wanted an 18.5" barrel (model #5077) so I decided to just buy one off a local dealer where I bought my first Glock.

What's so hard about HTML that the monkeys at Big 5 can't figure it out?

But Remington doesn't have an 8-shot 870 Express synthetic stock in their catalog, nor on their website... so is this a factory "special" with extended magazine capacity?
