    Looking for home defense

It was suggested to me, that I have a look at the Remington 870 HD for home defense. I don't know much about shotguns, would the 870 be a good choice?

Boy, that is a loaded question...excuse the pun. It really comes down to your individual situation, but more important is what you're most accurate and comfortable with in your selection.

Depending on the situation, my wife is more comfortable with her Mossberg 500 20 gauge, and then my Colt Trooper with .38 spl. rounds. For me, it would be one of my M4s, then a 1911.

Home defense is the weapon you operate best at during high stress situation. That could be handgun, rifle, shotgun, baseball bat, your fist, etc.

With that said, whatever weapon you plan on using, train with it and be efficient with it. Some say Shotguns the best HD because you just point in general direction and shoot but at close range, you still have to aim, and at long range, well....was it self defense?

Anyways, for your question about the 870, that is a good shotgun. Never had problems with mines.

good gun, train with it. If you have a two story house, remember you have two at rest positions.

when shopping for my HD scatter tube, i looked at the Rem 870 and the Moss 500. i got to handle both, shoot with both and do a little training with both.

personally i went with the Mossberg 500. the action release and safety button were in a much better location, allowing me to operate them without changing my grip, lowering the weapon or removing my eyes from the target.
in my opinion, the 500 is perfectly set up to were after just a few shots, you will be able to operate it without even thinking.

i have put well over 5000 rounds through mine, without a single hiccup.
if i had to do it all over again, i would still go with the 500.
If you suck with irons you will suck with optics. The difference is the aimpoint will allow you to suck faster and a scope will give you a closer look at how much you suck.

If you are a cheap skate like me go for the Hawk 982 it's an 870 clone but just a little more solid and you can't slap a longer barrel on her like an 870. The safety on the 870 is in the perfect place not on top of the gun like the mossy. you also wont need to hit the action bar if you keep it cruiser ready. If you want to be able to shoot skeet or trap also get the Mossy 2 barrel big 5 combo.

As a side note I WOULDN'T suggest a pistol grip. They look cool and all but ask people that actually shoot em and they are punishing and not all that accurate. Myth aside you do need to actually aim them. I personally went with a stock that had a regular shoulder stock + a pistol grip.

for a while i was thinking a shotgun would be best for me. But i thought of all the ways someone would be trying to get in my house and the most likely place for someone to break in would be my back slider and the window next to it. So God forbid that happening i would think about the buckshot, or slug penetrating his body and exiting doing damage to my house like my sliding glass window or any of my windows. And i didn't really want excess damage. BUT at the same time it doesn't matter when my life is on the line, so i bought both... A shotgun and my primary S&W M&P in .45. I keep it with a magazine in with hollow points.

True, Dont get PG. I thought I wanted one I got it and regretted it. It actually makes the gun feel like it has more muzzle rise.

For shotgun, stay with straight stock.

                            Yeah that would suck.

OP, I'm happy with my 870. I also bought a 28" barrel so I can use it for fun busting clays also.

Mossberg sells a set with a PG and a full stock. You get both. Right around $350.
