Mossberg 500c reassembly problem.

I just got my new Mossberg 500C 20ga just out of jail. It was a gunbroker purchase and I am somewhat new to firearms. I took it apart and cleaned it following some youtube directions online. When I put it back together I tried to do a function check as shown on the video.

I found that I am able to open the slide without having to press the slide release button. I have a Rem 870 12ga and a Mossberg 500 12 ga and check both and they do not allow me to use the action unless I press the slide release.

This is definitely a problem right? It seems to me that if I were to fire the shotgun, it would slam open with the blast. I unassembled and re-assembled it a dozen times and same situation.

Is there anyone that may be able to help me out? I am in South OC and at the OnTarget range quite a bit. I would be willing to pay someone (money, ammo, beer) to check it out if possible. Should I go to a gun smith? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm confused...it sounds like it's functioning fine...

When you rack it, you either need to pull the trigger, or press the slide release. Otherwise you shouldn't be able to actuate the pump again.

No, it will not "slam open" when you shoot it'

So, if you rack it, safety on, NO trigger pull, your saying you can rack it again without using the slide release. If so, yes that is a problem.

If you rack it, pull the trigger (that will unlock the action) repeat that over and over. Thats the way its supposed to work.

Thank you for your responses. If I were to rack it, I can keep racking it without pressing the slide release or pressing the trigger. Is it possible I did not put the rifle together properly or do the parts have to be defective in order to accomplish this?

If its able to do that, I don't think you assembled it wrong, it will have something to do with the trigger assembly.

It could be worn or maybe the spring that keeps it in the normal position has loss its tension.

I think shotcaller6 asked a great question. Yes I did let the hammer fall when it was removed. I was trying to figure out how to put it back together. I am not mechanically inclined and though videos help I still get thing wrong. Thanks everyone for their help.

Take it apart again.....rotate the hammer back with your finger until it snaps into fire position......put the gun back together....get back to us

No offense intended but why would you even post this it serves no point / purpose or real help to the OP?

iamrandy did you function test it before dis assembly to verify it was in working order or just get it and yank it apart first before doing so? Since if you did not function test it you may never know if the problem was you or the factory - if it did function fine before the cleaning / taking it apart it was clearly something you did all due respect - if you didn't test it first you just have to chalk it up to a lesson learned and add it to your to do check list next time you break a firearm down. Ether way just take it to a competent gun smith or person who know Mossbergs in and out before you mess something up permanently. Chances are it is something small that you are overlooking or missing but a gunsmith will help support your claim if it was a factory defect and give you a leg to stand on when contacting / dealing with customer service where if you were to send it back now and tell them you worked on it yourself / took it apart past a standard field strip they are going to ding you / want you to pay them to fix it anyhow or even worse place the fault on you and possibly void your warranty just food for thought / my two cents Buddy hope it helps.

I just wanted to post a final follow up. I ordered a new trigger assembly for about $30 and all is good now. I must have messed something up when I left the hammer fall with the trigger assembly removed. Lesson learned. Thank you to everyone with constructive advice!
