Buying first over-under, need advice.

Hello, I'm new here and I recently went shooting with my friends and went trap shooting for the first time. It was the most fun I've ever had and now I am hooked. I am looking to buy a shotgun for under $1000 and I have read a lot of other posts and I have decided that I really want an over under. I'm not a hunter or anything like that and do not have any other uses for a gun other than sporting. I really like trap and would also use the gun for double trap and skeet which is why I was thinking about getting an over under shotgun (I'm personally not a big fan of semi-autos) so i was looking into Lanber and have heard a little bit about this Tristar company but not enough to know any more than that. I understand that shotguns are all about feel and stuff but I don't have a lot of people around with o/u's and I am also a fairly competent craftsman so at some point down the road i could make my own stock to fit my dimensions and such. But if i was to get talked out of an over under i would go for a Remington 870 since that was the gun I shot and it felt perfect.

This is a walk down memory lane for me as I was in this same position a few years ago. I bought a used 870 and did well with it in both trap and skeet.
High $ guns are out of my price range so we must make do with what we can afford. I did move up to an O/U that I could afford but the 870 allowed me to keep shooting, meet new people and try other guns that were in my price range.
I can easily sell the 870 for exactly what I paid but I want to hold on to it, for now.
Don't dive to deep into the water, wade around a little first!

tanks thats some pretty good advice. im definitely gonna go shoot a few more times before im ready to buy anything but i was just wondering what you all thought about this.

by the way since im very new to this how do you shoot skeet with your 870? do you just not do really close doubles?

Use the 870 for skeet....using a pump does not limit your Skeet game. After a while your brain will just pump the gun automaticly.

Open chokes will improve your game ....Skeet is shot at ranges of 25yrds and under.

Get yourself an 870 (since you like the gun already) with a 28" barrel that has intercahable chokes......get a set of choke tubes...F, M, IC and SK....you will be set up to shoot Trap, Skeet and Sporting Clays by just changing the choke tubes

Get out there....break clays, have fun, learn....have more fun.

Lots of guys shoot pump guns for skeet with great success. A few run the course (25) or more, regularly. Get out there and have fun shooting.

Well the thing is that the Lanber (which from what i heard is a pretty good gun and the most popular shotgun sold in the uk) is only a few $100 more and then i would have a decent over under from the get go. I'm just kind of torn between the two ideas.

I shot trap with an 870 12 and 20 gauge for years. Good, reliable shotgun, and would be my first choice if I was just starting out. When it comes to over/under guns, I've always found it best to stick with quality names like Browning and Beretta. After 20+ years of hunting and trap shooting, they have never given me a speck of trouble and they always shoot where you point them.

Save your money and buy a Beretta or Browning.... An 870 can be an effective tool for skeet and I recommend going that route, unless your willing to spend the $$$$ on a quality O/U... Buying a cheap O/U is a WASTE...

You should be able to find a quality O/U in the used market well with in your budget. Browning, Remington, and Winchester all make excellent O/U's that can find with a little looking.

The 870 is an excellent choice in both value and dependability, be sure it has the interchangeable chokes.
