Shotgun registration or ownership questions

A friend of mine has a pump shotgun that was left at his house by a family friend who was living at his house. The family friend has since moved out of state and basically just told my friend to keep the shotgun.

What are the requirements to legally own the shotgun?

The problem is that the family friend isnt coming back here and i doubt a transfer could be done any other way than ftf since they are not family members.
