    Mossberg 590 or 500?

Looking for some input as to which one to go for. The Mossberg 590 or 500. Seems the difference between the two is pretty minuscule. Any input?

Okay, the 500 is the base model mossberg. It ussually has a 28" barrel and wood stocks. It holds 5 rounds in the magazine tube + 1 in the chamber.

The 590 is a military/police shotgun that has composite stocks and holds 8 rounds in the magazine tube + 1 in the chamber. It can have a multitude of accessories including ghost-ring sights, and a heatshield.

I like the capacity of the 590

The 500 is more versatile than the 590. There is a larger variety of barrels you can pick up (590 has a thicker barrel), and fitting certain accessories like a heat shield can be easier on a 500 because of the lighter profile barrel.

Having said that, I still bought the 590 because my primary use is home defense. If you want to shoot clays with it though, a 500 might be a better bet.

          Oh, forgot to mention something:

If you still want a 590, but also still want to shoot clays and whatnot, I have read (but have not tried it out) that you can buy the longer hunting-type barrels sold for the Mossberg 835, and they will fit on the 590's receiver. The only catch is that those barrels only work if you have the 5-shot magazine tube. So if you want the 590 with the 20" barrel, bayonet lug and 8-shot tube, you'll need to buy the 5-shot magazine tube along with the long barrel from Mossberg, and swap both the magazine tube and barrel any time you want to use the longer barrel.

It's not as complicated if you just get the 500, but if you really want the 590 (and who dosent? ) then that option is available if you're willing to deal with the inconvenience of swapping out the magazine tube between uses.

Only the 590 A1 has the heavy barrel. The 590 SPX has a standard weight barrel.

I got the 590 SPX .. like the capacity. Couldn't see the need for the extra $100 for the A1 for general HD purposes.

              What's your use case?

I wanted a shotgun for sport and HD so I got a 500. All I have to do is swap barrels depending on where I have the gun.

HD, SHTF, Zombie Apocalypse, rioting in the streets.

To be honest, I bought the cruiser model several years ago with the heat shield. The first time I shot it, the shield popped right off. Then the brass bead on the barrel (front sight) worked its way loose. Then a screw holding the ejector to the receiver worked its way out. I'm hoping their quality control has gotten better.

I have both and I can turn my 500 into a 590, but I can't make my 590 do what the 500 can. The 590 is pretty much a combat gun. My 500 is actually shorter and lighter and I can shoot damn near anything on the planet with a rifled slug barrel.
If I need lotsa rounds, I have a Saiga 12.

I have the 590A1 SPX-- love the mag capacity; the ergos and the fiber optic ghost ring sights are worth the price of admission alone. And then there's the bad *** bayonet...

No lug, no buy. With the heat shield and a fixed bayonet it's as scary looking as a shotgun gets.

Definitately on my hit list this year.

                        590. 8+1. Mine is a SP so barrel is not as thick as A1. No ghost rings either just a simple bead and its a beauty, shoots and feels great!

The 590A1 to me feels like it's better built than the 500. However the 590 does cost more.

That's because it is better made. It's a military shotgun (USN and USMC).
