Where are you going for your C&R Shotguns?

So I'm on a tighter than usual budget and recently have a need for 3 shotguns. We're in the process of securing a vacation home that is an unincorporated area and looking for something affordable as a back up to a revolver that will make the trip back and forth- however based on the wildlife population (both the 4 and 2 legged kind) we're looking for something that we can leave at the property locked up.

My son is just beginning to show interest in upland hunting but at his age needs something I can cut/adjust/lop to his length of reach- its very hard to justify spending a great deal of cash on a firearm that I'm going to replace or upgrade in two to five years.

I'm doing a ton of dog training- working with the dog in the field and live birds I can either continue to borrow a training pistol or reload my own shotgun shells with a more inexpensive primer.

All three of these are for different purposes, all three of these are great candidates for something in the sub 250 range which has me thinking C&R off brand (JC Higgens, JC Penny, Sears type models) shotguns- its near impossible to find these in the Marketplace.

Is there something else I should consider or is there a suggestion on where to go for C&R in Southern California?

Recently, I purchased a 12 ga single shot break action, and two weeks later a 20 ga single shot break action. Both from smaller gun shows (Turlock and Fresno) and both were C&R. I walked out with them.

Don't know where you're located, but keep an eye out for your local shows- I'm always seeing shot guns for sale there. Good luck!

Oh, I selling the above-mentioned 12 ga at cost.

      You're going to spend 250 x 3 = 750 on shotguns?

Why not buy a youth 870 in 20 gauge for $350-ish?

It comes with a spacer system, so you can adjust length of pull...

21 inch barrel means that it won't overwhelm your son, plus it's short and handy enough for defense.

If the stock is too short for the adults, add a slip on recoil pad for HD duty?

As long as you take the shotgun with you when you leave the vacation home, do you really need more than one new gun?

Give Simpson Firearms in Galesburg, IL a call.

They carry CR bolt action shotguns and other stuff.

Gun shows, church socials, fishin' holes, bingo nights or anywhere older gentlemen of rural heritage may congregate (and always have some cash on hand).

Always be polite, and never assume that old beater shotgun in the corner doesn't have some strong sentimental attachment; compliment, ask about stories and share your own, you would be surprised what comes out of a friendly conversation.

                Michael,

All really valid points- I'm leaning towards the 870 for the son and I like the adjustability of the youth model.

The second home however and the dog training aren't as easily served by this though. I need a firearm that I can leave behind at a second home so I'm not transporting constantly in a tightly packed space with dogs, kids, and a not so thrilled wife. The dog training shotgun I would prefer to be a single shot... I'm going to keep an eye out for a youth model in the Classified section but seem to have a really hard time either finding a youth model or a C&R in the sub 250 range.

Appreciate the suggestions about the bingo, church social areas- I'll start to take a look around.
