    Tweaking my 870

    Hi all,
I bought a Rem 870 about a year ago from Turners for 305 bucks (digital camo print). I've been contemplating making it a tactical - home defense gun. It already has the extended mag tube on it. It did not come with any type of top rail for optics.
I have looked at some of the aftermarket stocks and really don't like the recoil reducing stocks (sliding with springs, etc). For 300 bucks, I can afford to throw some funds at it.. Also looking to mount a sure fire m955 on it..

Any ideas or what you have used and like would be appreciated..

meh.. For stocks There are some adapters that allow the use of normal AR stocks. There are also cheaper ones like the ATI stock I run.. I will link below. There's a site that sells the mounts for SG's to add lights but for the life of me I can't remember the name. Maybe someone else can chirp in there.
the last link is a light mount that's similar to the one I was looking for. Most people think optics for HD are not needed.

    I use the ATI

Why don't you just buy a bunch of ammo and go shoot it a lot. Make its operation second nature to you. That has much more value than a bunch of aftermarket crap that just makes the gun heavy and clumsy.

There seems to be a lot of 'need' out there to accessorize everything. Other than maybe a light, there isn't anything you need.

Optics for deer hunting? Or maybe a little light weight red dot for bad guy hunting?

Like others, I'm a fan of keeping it simple. Optics on a shotgun are unnecessary in my opinion...unless you just want one for the "fun" factor. If you already have the extended mag tube, a surefire forend and maybe a six shell side saddle are about all I would consider doing.

There are some drawbacks to the surefire forend though. It's certainly the best integrated light system out there. But it's heavy and expensive in comparison to other setups. You could get a surefire 6P with a simple bracket that mounts to the mag tube. This would be a very solid setup, lighter, and also more easily removable if you wanted to take it off for range sessions, etc.

op didnt mention if his 870 had the short barrel or long. If its long then he needs to get the shorter barrel for a hd gun.

i believe in the KISS philosophy for a HD shotgun. i prefer to keep my 870P as light as possible, and would only consider adding weight that 'is worth it's weight' in functional improvement. i suggest you do the same.

I have an 870 Police with 18" barrel, standard 4 round tube, and rifle sights. The only "accessory" is nylon ammo carrier on the buttstock. Lightweight, nimble, and utterly dependable. I'll take that over some GI Joe Airsoft looking boat anchor shotgun all day long.

honestly its ur gun... and im sure most people that tell u to keep it simple is because one way or another we have all added to much and carrying ur dang gun actually becomes a hassle.... i just run a side saddle tac light heatsheild and a 1 point sling...and its simple and works everytime i need it to...

I agree with the KISS also. I still want a +2 extension but I can't fork over the cash. I' am a little drained due to medical bills still. This is really all that's needed for my taste. I don't need a light since our apartment is small and well lit. I do have a tac-light in the night stand near the 1911 though.

Check out Magpul's site. I just outfitted my 870P with their SGA stock and forend and love it. The forend will accept rails for light mount. These come in black and flat dark earth.

Keep it simple. Straight stock, extension tube, surefire forend.
