Rock Island Armory M5 Initial Review

    Part One:

Stumbled across this at Big5 with a price tag of $279.00. (I think)

Figured it was worth a shot. 10 Days later I had it home in all it's greasy glory. After wiping off a good portion of the birthing goo I gave it a quick inspection. Made in the Phillippines, imported by Armscor USA/Rock Island Armory in Pahrump, NV. It's a bit on the heavy side, just shy of 8lbs with the steel receiver, jeweled bolt, heat shield, nickel finish and a polymer speedfeed style stock.

Capacity is 4+1 with 3" shells and 5+1 with 2 3/4", cross bolt safety forward of the trigger, bolt release on passenger side rear of trigger. Two pump/slide rails which is apparently the upgrade from the King flite it's copied after. 20 Inch barrel giving an OA length of 40" and RIA/Armscor's Lifetime Warranty.

First issue I noticed was that the stock will only hold two shells if they are very short 2 3/4" shells. Two Winchester Universal 8 shot shells fit.

Winchester SuperX OO Buck and Rifled Slug were just a shade too long

I planned on upgrading the stock anyway so this isn't a huge thing. Some guys have fitted Mossberg stocks onto theirs with a bit of dremeling.

I had a quick meeting this morning and between it and taking the kid to school I took advantage of the early daylight

So I headed to the LEO range I have occasional access to.

    Which has just been revamped

    Yes I'm showing off.

    Took the following ammo

Worked through the 8 shot, everything went fine. Cycled smooth and kept good groupings at 7, 10 and 15 yards. After the 13th round however, there was a jam. spent shell in the chamber and couldn't get it to open up. Trigger was back, but the bolt release was in an odd position. Put it across my knee and gave it a light spank and she opened up.

I decided to move onto the 5 rounds 00 shot, great groupings at 7, 10 and 15 yards. Everything went smooth so I advanced to the slugs. Having never fired slugs from a 12ga., my shoulder didn't know what hit it.

    Learning is fun.

the 5 I did shoot off were pretty tight at 25 yards.

Overall it's a decent pumper for the price. No failure to load, and only that odd jam on the opening/ejection stroke in 25 rounds. I'll be taking it apart sometime this week to check out the internals and take better pictures.

The receiver looks an awful lot like a Mossy 500/590 not sure if the pins line up. The top of the receiver has a grooved, level(ish) surface but no machine screws or options for a rail. The mag tube doesn't have the option of extensions, but one could possibly order the longer 7 round tube I suppose. If they do I'll probably look at what accessory options will fit. Looking into snagging a magpul stock kit to try. Possibly a full rail (rhino, Mesa or Aim possibly) to test fit.

So far I'm happy with it. It'll be a decent range toy and rape deterrent system for the time being.

Looks to be a Mossberg copy.

The shell elevator looks exactly like a Mossberg 500's.

Looks nice & pretty, but for that price might as well get a Maverick 88 (which I've owned, along with a 500 and IMO they're pretty much exactly the same thing). I only say that because you can find new Mav's for around $199 to $219 on the high side.

          Still, nice review.

That so called jam is known as the "Remington stick" another fan boy biased term mossy guys used to shunt mossys being better than remingtons.. Complaining remingtons QC has gone to crap.. Which yes it has gone down a bit.. But I cant point you to 20+ reputable gun companies who have done the same.. Its part of the times and just part of life you cant always make things the way you use to due to upping wages and material costs.. So you have to cut costs because face it its business. They do what they need to do to make a buck..

Anyways people blamed it on 870s only having tis problem with winchester.. Very common.. But I've seen it yesterday actually once out of 175 shot in my 870 and 1 time in my buddy's 28" brand new 500 combo and once in my other buddys 500 turkey. And a few other times with different guns at the trap fields.

Common denominator is low end ammo aka winchester/federal/estate.. Happens more with winchester walmart bulk ive noticed but happens.. Its not a serious issue at all. So it sounds like your guns running fine and dont worry about that little jam. Just know how to clear it by grabbing the slide and slamming the shotty on the ground..

Also check your barrel for chamber burrs that usually leads to more frequant jams..

But good little wright up and happy shooting
