    mossberg 500 vs. 590

    Hello,

I currently own a mossberg 500. I'm aware that the 590 has a metal trigger guard in order for it to be in accordance with some military standard. Also, the 590 has the capability to hold 9 shells as opposed to the 8 I currently have. In hind sight, I suppose I should have paid the little extra money for the 590. Anyhow, I'm contemplating adding another 12 gauge that is considered an "upgrade." Should I get the 590, or is that kind of redundant? What extra benefits (accuracy, reliability, life-span, ruggedness, etc. etc.) would the 590 bring compared to my 500?

I'm also considering the remington 1100 or the mossberg 930. I'm not too certain, but I read somewhere that a semi-auto shotgun that holds more than 4 or 5 rounds cannot have a pistol grip stock, or a pistol grip only set-up. Is that true? What gives? It's a "fixed magazine."

    Definition of a Assault Weapon

    (6) A semiautomatic shotgun that has both of the following:
    (A) A folding or telescoping stock.
    (B) A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon,
    thumbhole stock, or vertical handgrip.
    (7) A semiautomatic shotgun that has the ability to accept a detachable magazine.
    (8) Any shotgun with a revolving cylinder.
The following definitions shall apply relative to defining assault weapons:
    (1) "Magazine" shall mean any ammunition feeding device.
    (2) "Capacity to accept more than 10 rounds" shall mean capable of
accommodating more than 10 rounds, but shall not be construed to include a feeding
device that has been permanently altered so that it cannot accommodate more than 10.

So you can have either a pistol grip or a collapsible stock on a semiauto shotgun, but not both.

I'm not sure if the normal 590 has a metal trigger housing, but I know the 590A1 does. It also is parkerized vs blued, has ghost ring sights and a bayonet lug(takes the same bayo as an M16.) I have an old 500 6 shot and a 590A1 9 shot. I use the 590 for HD and the 500 for clays.

You may want to go semi auto if you are looking for something different. As long as you stay clear of the feature combinations listed in the Assault Weapon Definition above, you should be good to go. If you get a foreign made semi auto, you may have to worry about 922r if you decide to modify it(usually increasing mag capacity.)

also the 590A1 has a heavier barrel than the standard 590.

if you're looking to upgrade you may also want to check out the 870 police magnum

You are right. 590s have a plastic trigger guard.

If it was between a 500 and 590(not the A1)... I'd go with the 500 combo
But if it was between the 500 and 590a1... 590a1 hands down

So aside from all the goodies that the 590 A1 comes with, are they pretty much similar in performance to the 500?

So, I can get a pistol grip OR a collapsible/folding stock, but not both? Are there any aftermarket stocks out there that are collapsible/folding but do not have a pistol grip? I've never seen a standard (non-pistol gripped) style stock that folds. Thanks everyone for the help thus far.

the 590 is not a semi.... it's a pump... It has a 20" barrel so as long as the OAL is 26" you can pretty much do what you please... that's the beauty of a pump

The 590a1 has parkerized finish so it's more durable then the blued 500 or 590, and it's got a longer barrel (though not by much longer) so it will hold a tighter pattern then the 18.5" thr 500 combo comes with... and of course the 590a1 has the bayo lug for those close encounters...LOL

So, legally I wouldn't be able to get a knoxx spec ops stock on a semi-auto shotgun that hold 9 rounds, correct? It is a pistol grip with a telescoping stock.

Would the recoil be manageable on a semi-auto with just a pistol grip only set-up shooting 00 bucks?

Knoxx last I checked doesn't make a version of the SpecOps for any semi-autos.

As for what is manageable... that all depends on you. If you are shooting #00 tactical low-recoil; and you are a big person, then maybe... Find a range that rents one... try it... find a person here who lives near you and owns one - ask them to try it... potentially wear appropriate head gear; in case it tries to hit you in the face because your grip wasn't quite right.
