IC. How exactly does it stay on target better while shooting faster than a pump? I've never been able to mitigate recoil and muzzle rise any better with an M4 than a pump. From my experience, the M4's kicked just as hard as any pump that I've shot. Nothing like shooting an 1187, 930, or A300.While we're here arguing about the latest high tech running shoes, there's some Kenyan out there running barefoot. Understand that this answer is coming from someone with little experience, but what I observed in the classes I took was that the guys with pumps not only had to deal with the recoil, but also wavered off the targets when they cycled their actions. I was able to simply ride the recoil from one target to the next.IC. How exactly does it stay on target better while shooting faster than a pump? I went to the FS class with a friend who has been a trap and skeet shooter for over 30 years, and the whole way there he was telling me how he would destroy me. Well, after the first day, he said that there is no way he could beat me on time or accuracy, even on his best day. I was able to DG the shotgun course at FS, and I attribute that to the gun. I know that I learned a great deal, and did as I was instructed, but I could not have done it with a pump.
Next month I am doing a 5 day course at Gunsite, with the last 2 days being advanced tactics. I can't wait to put the M4 to another test.WARNING: This post will most likely contain statements that are offensive to those who lack wit, humor, common sense, and or maturity.

Fair enough. You are right in that he is trained but I guarantee you that with 2 people of equal skill, the fellow with the autoloader will be at least as accurate and faster going from target to target than the guy with the pump.

I have an FN SLP MK1 Competition and it eats everything including #8 cheapo Winchester and Federal bulk from Walmart. I've never had a problem with it cycling low base and I broke it in with only 25 rounds of #6.
I run it in 3-gun and tactical training classes. Runs like a champ. I'm much faster with a semi-auto than a pump.
The Mossberg 930 SPX, the Remington Versa Max Tactical, the Mossberg JM Pro, and the Benelli M4 are all fine guns as well. All are worthy of consideration. I suspect what you wind up with will be what you find available first. All but the M4 are in short supply."Show me a young conservative and I'll show you a man without a heart. I've always heard good things about the SLP. Looked at it real hard when I got my M4. Can't imagine you'd be disappointed with it. Or the M4 if you're willing to go that much. It's an awesome gun.
Pumps usually get the nod for reliability for home defense. But I've seen plenty of them jam and they can be short stroked. I wouldn't hesitate for a second to trust a GOOD semi auto. One that you have proven reliable just like you would with a semi auto pistol. I also think they're a bit faster for the average shooter. Note that I said average. I have no doubt that a well trained, well expereinced individual can run a pump gun as fast as a semi. But for the less experienced, a semi is likely to be faster."Kestryll I wanna lick your doughnut."

Home defense? Dude I'm dying for a 590A1 with a bayonet hanging off the end of it. That's home defense.

All good info to read and consider. Thank you all. My father was a weapons and weaponless defense instructor with fish and game. He would back hand me if he heard me talk about a semi auto. He's and 870 pump man all the way. That being said. I bought an FN slp mk1 tactical. It has the tri rail and a light with pressure pad. Im gonna put my Leuopold delta point on it. Gets here to Bishop Friday! Seven P's and I should be fine.Comment

Welcome to the FN family. Make sure to completely clean your shotgun prior to taking it out to the range. The gun is covered in manufacturer's grease. It is mentioned in the manual. Read the instructions. Adjust the comb and lop pad to your comfort. Best of luck. What light did you get? As this is an accessory I will eventually get in the future. All good info to read and consider. Thank you all. My father was a weapons and weaponless defense instructor with fish and game. Good to be welcomed! Thanks for the tips. I am going to thoroughly read the manual! The seller on Guns America installed a night hunter 260 lumen light with pressure pad and it comes with a charger though I am a huge fan of surefire. I have an x400 weapon light/laser on my glock which is fantastic. I am looking at a mesa tactical 8 round shell carrier, nordic component release and handle as well. Already got the leuopold delta point holo sight.Welcome to the FN family. Make sure to completely clean your shotgun prior to taking it out to the range. The gun is covered in manufacturer's grease. Fn SLP shotgun
I've now had my FN SLP tactical shotgun for nine months now and I'm very pleased with the quality, reliability, and operation of the weapon. I've added a Leupold delta point and a Mesa tactical 8 shell carrier. I have zero problems. No failures to feed, swift cycling, no stove pipes, loading is smooth without any gun smithing. At fifty yards with rifled slugs I consistently hit a twelve inch gong free handed. The weapon is surprisingly accurate. I also feel no need for an oversized bolt release or charging handle. The only other accessory I plan on installing would be some kind of sure fire weapon light system though they do not offer a designated shotgun fore end for the SLP. Thanks to all for the advise! I'd loved to post pics though I'm operating solely from my iPhone and haven't figured out how to post them from here.
Thanks again and good shooting!
