FN SLP: Best home defense shotgun?

My father has always been a Remington man. I hear the quality isn't what it used to be. I am partial to FNH and hear their auto loader is pretty good. About half ther price of a Benneli. If you all wouldn't mind, I think I need some shotgun education before I make a purchase.

    Thanks for any help.

I have a FNH SLP tactical 18". I wouldnt give it the badge of best home defense shotgun. Not that its a bad shotgun, just that the coveted home defense shotgun badge usually pisses people off that their shotgun wasnt considered.

Anyway, SLP, great shotgun, but finicky with what you feed it. Then again light target loads wouldnt be considered home defense rounds. If you are shooting buckshot or slugs you should be fine. Stay away from low recoil stuff, doesnt like it.

Some people get the surecycle system installed to get the SLP to feed the ttarget stuff. FN does state that one should only be using minimum 3 DRAM and 1 1/8 shot in the manual (a lot of people dont read). Failure to follow instructions causes the FTE.

People find the SLP's quality, fit and finish a lot better than the mossberg (that is cheaper in price and looks very similar). I like the safety location on the SLP compared to mossberg's since i have the pistol grip version.

FNh as you know their history. Not many people are willing to shell out that kind of dough but are quick make comments and judgements about it not even shooting the gun.

The trirail that comes with the tactical is a long sought out piece. Yes i had FTE but those are on the low recoil target loads which is not what the SLP tactical 18" was made to shoot for. I like the adjustable comb and buttpads. The sights that came with it are more than adequate.

Sorry i keep editing my post. Benelli you will have to he 922r compliant. Not hard to be 922r, but i find that to be a con on the Benelli as well as the price.

Will i get it again? Yes.

As for the Remington, the current shotgun people are going for is the Versamax, at least that is what i have been readinf.

I'm looking at a good, quality tactical shotgun but Benneli is just too much for me so good to hear that the SLP is worth it. I was trying to find a Scar 17s but those are priced out of my budget right now. Dont know if a 16s is any better.

What are some must have add on's for the SLP?

Edit all you want. I appreciate the info. Just trying to make an informed decision. I do not have much internet access so reading up is hard and shotgun mags are a little biased imho.

Got any good sites that have tactical slp's?

To tell you the truth i havent added anything on the SLP tactical. Funds have been diverted to other gun stuff.

It comes with decent ghost ring sights. Depending if you get the tactical, that comes with a pisitol grip and trirail. If you get the standard non tactical SLP it doesnt have the pistol grip (this is NOT an add on later if you want pistol grip, buy it) or the trirail (hard to find, lots of people want it). The tactical version is 18" barrel, the regular one i think is a 22" barrel.

Nordic component makes a larger bolt as well as some after market stuff.

Surecycle would be a pretty good investment (i will eventually do it).

Or a flashlight tacked on the trirail

Some people put a red dot on their shotgun, remember it sits low.

Each person and their definition of home defense is different. I would camp in a room with my family and SLP. I would not sweep and search my home, too risky.

The SLP doesnt have that many aftermarket parts for it. Their are some similarities it has with Winchester (but not much aftermarket parts there either). This shotgun is adequate straight out of box, it is not the barbie of shotguns. The SLP is more like a drag queen, its already manly enough.

If you want to get lots of aftermarket parts for your shotgun, get a remington. Hell they even make a bullpup conversion for the remington 870.

I have a Leuopold delta point with cross slot mount for the slp. I would put a flashlight. Surefire have anything for them yet? My father always said a high lumen flashlight was a powerful weapon.

Tri rail sites? I'm having trouble finding the SLP's on the net. Any ideas? My local ffl hasn't got back to me yet. Gotta get one before Obamunism closes around us here in cali.

Forgot to answer your question. Before the panic i got my SLP around early december of 2012 on galleryofguns.com. When i purchased they had 77 in stock. After i did my DROS, none left. Good luck.

I have a slp mk 1 haven't really rode it hard. Buck and slugs it's impressive. Before I mode anything on it, I will shoot the snot out of it first. Not a fan of pistol grips, to each his own. Would like to red dot it one day. there are plenty of auto loader out there. I bought this because I have lots of shotguns. I does put a smile on my face shooting clays. happy hunting for your next purchase.

Thanks. Finding one would be nice. Gun broker sellers wont sell to californians for the slp tactical. If you all come across one please shoot me a link. I would be much obliged.

I have had my SLP MK1 for 3 years and about 3000 rounds through it. Casual clay busting, multi gun, and shotgun matches. Nothing has broken yet. Broke it in with 100 high base #6. Have only run the light piston. Low recoil buck & slugs. 3 DRAM 1 1/8 oz bird shot. I run it very wet with CLP.

Mods: NC Comps Bolt handle, Big bolt release button, trimmed forend, beveled loading port. Shortened mag spring. 3/4" LOP reduction.

There is a lighter load piston you can get for those Feather Light loads. Brownells carries them. Would I buy another one,,,yep

I'm partial to Benelli's myself, but if you're trying to keep the price down the Mossberg is worth a look. The Scottsdale Gun Club's site has a good comparision of retail prices,
