reloading steel shot for .410

Does the Lyman Shotshell Reloading Handbook 5th Edition section on steel shot have any recipes for loading .410? If not does any one know of a book that does?

Sorry, I've got the 4th edition and there is no .410 steel shot load data in it. I'd reccommend trying to contact somebody at Pacifica Rod and Gun Club?, the club that shoots at Lake Merced in SF. I know they're closing but, they have to shoot steel there so, I bet someone there can help you.

There is no data for loading steel shot in a 410 and I doubt they will bother since it's just too difficult to get wads thick enough to protect the barrel and give any kind of capacity. Your best bet, albeit very expensive is to try the Bismuth or other non toxic shot available on the market. The one saving grace for the 410 is that you only need 1/2 ounce. Steel also has not been loaded for the 28 probably for the same reasons. If you need loading data, you should give the folks at Ballistic Products a call and see what options you have. I've been getting loading data and components from them for years and they seem to be the best people to go to when it comes to loading shotshells. Do a google search. Great company to deal with..

Go over to duckhuntingchat and ask the same question. There are guide over there that uses a 28G to kill honkers with heavy shot.

For steel and other non toxic loads there are really only three places that make reloading supplies in the US. (Ballistic Products, Precision Reloading, & RSI) RSI only has stuff for 10G & 12G as far as I know.

Bismuth offers very similar performance to lead, but is very expensive. In many cases you do not need special wads (you may need buffer as it can turn to powder if launched too fast). The original company is no longer making it so it is hard to come by.

If this is for light recoil for a child, you will have a lot more choices & better luck if you go with 20G or 12G and use really light loads. I can give you more information, but some of the guys at the above listed site, are shooting 7/8 oz of steel in a 12G at about 1700FPS and really doing well. A 12G with a 7/8 oz load will kick less than a 20G with a 7/8oz load and it will pattern better due to the larger bore.
