    Mag Spring Squeaks

    Hey all,

I brought my mossberg 500 to the range on 3 different occasions. I bought it brand new, and never took apart the gun further than removing the barrel to clean and oil whatever parts could be reached from that point (barrel and exposed parts of the shotgun). Now, after 4 years I realized the magazine tube makes squeaky noises when loading rounds.

Do I need to do something to clean/maintain the mag tube spring?

Is it time I took apart the receiver and clean the inner parts?

    Thanks.

You might just need to clean out dust and dirt. Just remove the barrel and then unscrew the mag tube. If you've never take it off before you might want to get a pair of channel locks to help you. Clean and lube the spring and follower while you're at it When you put everything back just make sure the follower is seated flat in the receiver otherwise you wont get the mag tube back in. Hope this helps.

Yes...It definitely helps. I am somewhat hesitant to take apart things that I never have before. I saw a you-tube video on how to take apart the receiver, but nothing on the magazine tube...Anyone have a video on this or can point me in the right direction in viewing the proper way to do this?

I took some quick pictures, its very easy after the first time. After you remove the barrel, the mag tube can be unscrewed. Use a pair of channel locks with an old rag around the tube to keep from scratching it up. Once you take it off, the spring and follower will come right out. It should look like the first picture.

The second picture is the receiver, the top is the breech and the bottom is the threaded hole for the mag tube. The tube itself is nothing more than a pipe with some threads on one end and the hole for the barrel lug. When you put it back on, you just need to hand tighten the tube, it's really not going anywhere once you get the barrel back on.

If you want to take apart the receiver I would suggest following along with this video (maybe it's the same video you've seen) When I did it the first time, I would go and pause the video as I went along. Everything goes in one way and putting it together just needs patience the first few times.

            Your mag tube spring squeaks?

Does it feed rounds reliably when you shoot it? If so, IGNORE IT. Lots of things squeak. If you're not planning on being in an ambush position and needing to load your shotgun anytime in the near future I don't think it will be an issue...

Spearo... I'm a Remington fan as well, don't get me wrong... but their magtube springs squeak too...

If it really bothers you that much, pull the mag tube off and punch the tube with a bore brush then wipe down the spring and follower and put a light coat of grease on the spring. But it's really not an issue at all functionally and you're just making work for yourself.

If this is the worst of your problems, you need to find more important things to worry about.

Almost ALL shotguns squeak when you load them.
The coils of the spring slide against the inside of the tube as they compress.
Get over it, or wear hearing protection.

Thanks everyone for the great replies (although some sounded a bit derisive)... The pictures are great...I think I'll take apart the mag tube just to get more familiarized with shotguns and my mossberg in particular. Yes, that is the same video that I saw...It's great to know that the video succeeded in helping someone take apart their mossberg without any problems. I'll go step by step with that.

My mossberg works fine...cycles the rounds in the tube with no problems, but I thought it was awkward that it made a squeeky noise. Good to know that this issue is endemic with most shotguns, so mine is not abberant.
