    New Mossberg 88

I just picked up a new Mossberg 88, 12g and was wondering if there are any do's or dont's when breaking in a new shotgun, as in what type shells & how many rounds to cycle or anything else I should know? I live in Redlands, So CA and would like to know if there is anywhere local that I can run a few rounds through the 88 at? (I'll pick up after myself of course)

Great site, thank you for your time.

I believe you mean you picked up a Maverick 88.

Load and cycle a few dozen shells just pumping. This will loosen it up a bit.

When shooting, just remember to not short-stroke it. That was the only thing I could do to make mine not work correctly.

The one thing I recommend is to clean the whole gun well! Pay extra attn to the chamber. The 88s have a spray on finish and if some of the over spray gets into the chamber it makes extraction of spent shells very hard. My sons gun I had to wrap some steel wool around a cleaning brush and run it with a drill to get the chamber clean. I used the finest grade steel wool [0000] and kept it soaked with oil while it was turning. He has several hundred rounds through his gun and is just now starting to really smooth out. I have an 870 and model 500 to compare its action to. For what he paid the 88 is turning out to be a nice field gun. DR
