    Def of "high base"

Reading shotgun-related posts and websites, and still not totally familiar with the lingo yet, the term "high base" comes up regularly, such as "My semi-auto brand X only cycles reliably with high base shells". I've been trying to find a good definition for "high base" but haven't really found one. (And maybe it's not a strictly defined term anyway) Is high vs low base just a matter of the weight of powder charge? Powder + shot? If I were looking at a catalog of shotshells, how could I pick out the high base ones?

What's confusing is that I Google'd "high base" and one result was the Gun Tech glossary on the MidwayUSA site which says: "high base: A shotgun shell that utilizes a thicker base wad so as to fill the leftover space when using a small powder charge." That definition seems to imply a smaller than normal powder charge to me, which really confuses me.

high base to me means the shells that have high brass on the plastic (even if it is just brass plated steel)

my "1100 magnum" will only work with "high base"2 3/4 and 3 inch magnums

Thanks, Bohoki. That's what I had thought until I started looking at websites that Google turned up, and then I ran across this webpage. Look at the third photo of the Winchester hull. It has a short brass base but is labelled "high base". That's partly why I'm feeling confused about this term. Or maybe that label is wrong or the photo is wrong?
