Cutting Down an Over/Under???

Okay, I already own a mossberg 500 (the combo model from Big5) and i want to have an O/U. I want to use it for HD and came interested in a Stoeger Condor Outback like this:

But im wondering what IF I find a used O/U for a cheaper price and have it cut down to 20''??? Will tha affect harmonics? Can it be a DIY job or am i wasting my time and just take it to a gunsmith?

NO

There would be a lot of problems. The barrells are not silver soldered all the way down the barrells on this model. You would have to move and solder support and sight where you cut it. This could be a gunsmithing nightmare that you will wake up from when you have to trash it.

Trust me I have done many a hack job and I would not attemped it on this gun.

Go short pump for home defense.

Maybe shorten stock and put a side folding russian bayonette, if you want something unique.

Most under and over that are made to where you could saw them off are too expensive and are made for FINE DARE SHOOTINN. Competitian guns. If you so get one make sure it's barrells are soldered the entire length. I still would not reccommend cutting it.

Yes take it to a gunsmith THAT WORKS on SHOTGUNS!!!!

I would stick to single barrel - pumps - cheap autos.

O/U for HD doesn't make much sense.
You've got only two shots.

In any case, an O/U is much too pretty to chop up.

If you want a two barrel shotgun then buy a side by side. I don't remember the model numbers but it's some repop that's real nice. Dogs head hammers, 20 inch barrels, heavy great home defense gun fire twice and you still have a great club.

I don't think you are wrong to choppp an under & over. I think that a under & over - side by side - single barrell can make a good HD gun. It just much more easy with a short coach side by side or single barrell.

One advantage that you can keep it loaded for years - with out any spring under tention. Many people only look for outside hammers for this reason.
Pump guns have the spring tube compressed and the spring does get affected (loaded for years). Revoler pistols have the same advantage over auto pistols IMO.

I just bought a Remington Sparton 1100 in 12gauge and learned that it has a fully flooting fireing pin (Inertia type). You can lower the internal hammer very slowly with the cocking handle and have the hammer forward and the chamber loaded. There is NO WAY IN H**L that Remington reccamends this procedure. To have an out side hammer gun is better IMO for HD. In any two barrelled hidden hammered gun THIS DECOCKING IS TOO DANGEROUS - you must ASSSUME that the gun is cocked and ready to fire. You then can rely on the safety that locks only the trigger not the firing pins.

I allmost have it figure out how to put a Russian 91/30 bayonette on my Spartin single barrel. A M16 bayonette is easier to mount, BUTTTTT *and it is a big BUTTTTT* since this gun is made in Russia I think the Stalin's tooth pick will work and look a lot better for HD.

My mother put the 12gauge single barrell loaded - hammer forward (hammer was exposed/outside) behind the door with a waxed Dixey Cup over the barrell as a dust protector. Don't force Dixey Cup into barrell - just quish it around the barrell and tighten it like a drum. You shoot it with the cup right on there - most of the time there is no time to take the cup off. My MOM scared the Sears salesperson when she bought the gun but I don't want to boar you guyz with my seltered childhood.

The m91/30 bayonet fits on a Spartan shotgun??? Without mods?

With modification. I am going to machine and silder solder an attachment that will fit the Russian bayonette - two large chunks on metal and lotza file work - two story/duplex silver solder. The M16 baynotte one piece of metal - less file work - one simple silver solder - buttt the M16 looks like a Swiss armry knife on the end of your rifle.

And when bayonette is off it will look funky. I am pretty sure it also void my Remington warranty.

+1 for the side by side. Big 5 and Turners carries a couple models. They already have a real nice short stock, and 20" barrels. Just walk in and ask to see a "coach gun". They are made for all the Cowboy action shooters.

Great, short little guns that pack a wallup. And no need to cut anything down.

The reason i posted this thread because a guy was selling a beater O/U for $100. I figured if chopping an O/U would be cheaper than buying a brand new condor outback.

yeah but instead of dropping big bucks on an O/U...i rather buy a mossberg 590A1

but the 590 is 5 inches longer. doesn't fit in the trunk as nicely :X
