Remington 870 Express Synthetic 7 Shot

Just picked up a 12 gauge 870 Express Synthetic 7 Shot at Big5 for $390. Was a impulse buy. Anyone else recently pick one up? Just wondering what they're going for elsewhere and if I should give myself a

I was just reading past posts (just a few months ago) seeing these things going for a little over 300. I know Big5 probably isn't the best place to buy a gun or ammo, but they were closing and knowing I had to wait another 10 days was enough to make me not want to wait 11.

$400 seems to be the going price. I paid the same for a 5-shot version last year. FYI, I just found quite a bit of rust pitting on the receiver of mine, after it spent two months behindthe seats of my truck. Thats a pretty poor quality finish, as it replaced a Mossberg 590 that spent two years back there withoutcany signs of rust. Keep the hawg leg wet!

I paid a little more than that about a year ago. It does rust easily, I had it in the trunk of my car on the coast for a couple days and it had rust on the reciever.

The finish is a rust magnet.
Hose it down with Casey Birchwood Barricade a couple of times over the course of a couple of days. Reapply once in a while or so. Enjoy a rust free 870 Express.

I appreciate the advice guys. Was recommended this gun from a good buddy, never told me about the rust problem though :/. This is my first shotty so I've been looking forward to it for a while.

I'm glad to hear that this wasn't such a bad impulse buy (as for price at least). Just to be clear, everyone here is talking pre-dros and taxes right?

I got a like new one for $250 so... But that was about a year ago. No rust on mine although you might want to polish your bore in order to prevent the sticky round issue. Not sure if that's what it's called but it works.

Just cosmetic for me, mainly on the mag tube or the underside of the barrel next to the mag tube.

Have you considered having it cerakoted? Mine came cerakoted but cost $684.

That should be a nice gun and that's as good a price as one can expect.
People have recommended polishing the barrel to eliminate feeding problems, it's fairly easy and it seems to help.
Basically, you wrap some #000 steel wool around the end of a 3/8" dowel and chuck it in a hand drill. Run it just around the rear of the barrel or the whole thing-- not so much as to heat up the barrel much.
Unfortunately, the best thing you can do to make that a reliable gun is go train with it, which could cost you more than the price of the gun in instruction & ammo.
It is well worth it though. Even with a good pump like the 870 there are plenty of things you can do to keep it from running. Good technique and practice will keep the rust off of it too.

Pulled out my receipt from 2004 when I got my first 870 at big 5 on sale. Paid $310 back than before tax and dros.. Still not a bad price, $390 being as inflation and such. As far as shotguns go besides a few small tweaks, the 870 platform has remained the same since the original design in 1949.. There is a reason they haven't redesigned it, it is one hell of a work horse. I have owned a few different brands of pump model shotguns and not one of them are still in my safe .. I do still have four 870's sitting pretty in there though...In my opinion they are one of the best pumps with the largest market of aftermarket accessories. The options are almost endless.

The last family photo of the tactical 870's clay shooter was off in the safe...

OP, is your new 870 of the "old school" variety or the newer model that doesn't accept barrel swaps?

I still haven't received it yet. Waiting on the 10 day but I'm buying it brand new and I know the barrel is removable, just don't know if there's a 28" swap available for it.

Hispanic_Hercules, thank you for answering my original question and digging through to find out. Much appreciated. Hope you don't mind another question, what stock do you have on the 870 in front of the other 2?
