    shotgun n00b

hey guys. So i just purchased a mossberg 930 spx and had a few questions. Sorry for the seemingly dumb questions but im new to the long gun game.

First, what does it mean when a shell stovepipes? I have seen some posts regarding that and I do not know what that means and how to prevent or clear a round that stovepiped.

Second, can someone tell me how the #'s work with regards to shells? Is there a chart or something to refer to. Like 00 versus #8 and so on.

Lastly, what is the difference between buckshot, birdshot, and slugs. Im assuming the birdshot is smaller pellets, buckshot larger ones, and slugs just a large hunk of metal that comes flying out of the barrel.

Thanks in advance and I really appreciate the feedback.

Yep, you got that correct. #9 shot is very small, #0 is very big

Same as a stovepipe in a handgun or rifle. It means the shell didn't eject properly and is tyically caught hanging sideways out of the action. Manipulating the action again will usually clear it, but the stove pipe itself may have caused a feed issue for the next round.

See how the spent casing is stuck and sitting there jammed like a stoveipipe? Same thing with a shotgun or rifle.

Yup. That's basically it. Here's a clearer image of the shot size chart.

          Wait...

You want to use your shotgun, and expect it to not look brand new after you've used it?

          That's not a "n00b", that's a post from a realist

            Hahaha.

Oh and one other question. Some people have mentioned certain loads are not full power and that this particular mossberg likes to have full power run thru it during the break in period.

My last question is what would be considered a light load versus a full power load?

The ones labeled 'Low Recoil'. You get less recoil by smaller bang.

And lower recoil shells may not have the poop to cycle your shotgun's action
trial and error will tell you what works and what won't for your shotgun.
                Have fun!

I used to own an SPX 930. They run even better wet. I use Froglube but anything like SLIP, SEAL1, etc. works great.

On the 930's make sure to break it in with 1275+ feet per second shells. That's what kind of velocity is needed. The more velocity the better for a good break in.

Another n00b tip on the buckshot sizes.

The correct way to say buck shot #00 is........

"Can I get a box of double aught (like not, but without the N) buckshot"

You do NOT say "Can I get double zero" or "zero zero". You say that and people will know you are a n00b.

What about double oh? Will that work?
What part of "shall not be infringed" don't you understand?
