12 gauge J. Stevens Arms Co pump shotgun identification

Trying to identify a shotgun my father in law gave me. It says "Stevens Browning made by J. Stevens Arms Co Chicopee Falls, Mass. U.S" on the left side of the receiver. SN is 25765 stamped behind the trigger. "Browning Design - 12 Gauge" written on the left side of the barrel. I would love to get a date and model for this thing

Savage Model 720, or 745 IIRC.

Isn't the 720 an automatic? Needs pictures to tell which Browning-designed Stevens pump it is. There were several. Does it have a squared back receiver, or a rounded back receiver?

It could be any of a dozen Stevens designs. The most common pump ones you run into are the 520 and 620. But without pics, we can't do anything more than guess.

It looks like a Stevens 620 to me. I'll do some poking around, but that is my first impression.

(edit) Yes, it looks like a 620. They are good shotguns. They are the updated version of the 520, which is based on several Browning patents. Most of them are equiped with an autotrigger. That means that if you hold the trigger down and rack the slide forward, it will slamfire as soon as the bolt closes. Useful for spraying down areas quickly, but it does little for accuracy. Other than that, it is your basic pump action shotgun from the middle of the last century. Nothing fancy, but very reliable.

Wow, thanks for the info. With the model I was able to look up some pictures and do some research. I believe it was manufactured in 1942 which would seem right considering the condition and appearance.

                Yup, you're correct.

I was reading the post and not the title.
