HD Barrel Suggestions for 870 Wingmaster

I have an old 870 Wingmaster 12 ga. 2-3/4 with the old 28" mod. vented rib Bbl. and it, along with it's 20 ga. li'l sister, is my primary field gun.

I have been considering for quite a while getting a shorter, HD barrel for it. Bought a few boxes of the Winchester mil. over-run 12 ga. 2-3/4 00-Buck at Walmart the other day and that kind of moved the thought up to the front burner.

    Questions:

    - What Length/choke Bbl.?
    - Smooth or Rifled? (also like the idea of slugs)
    - Which manufacture?
    - Where to look for it?

    - Or just buy an Express or Moss so fitted that also has the extended mag as well?

A HD shotgun has always been a good idea but I've never dedicated even a Bbl. to it - only a box of #4's by the guncase.

    Thanks in advance.

I would go for a Remington barrel in cyl or IC choke. 18.5 inch and no need for rifled. Depending on the slugs, they can be fairly accurate through a smooth bore.

I'd look for a used barrel on Numrich. If you can't find a shorter one, I'd order a used longer one and cut it down to 20" or so. You don't need a choke or anything like that for the distances inside the home that you are likely to use it. Just pattern it.
I think Thor's hammer was an 45-70 lever action loaded with Garrett cartridges.

I find that 90% of the questions asked here have been answered 20 or more years ago by Jeff in hid Gargantuan Gunsite Gossip books.

18.5" blued barrel with the bead sight and fixed improved cylinder. Smoothbore is fine with slugs. You can order it from a Calgunner:

You can also look for a 18.5 or 20" on gunbroker. I got a brand new take off 20" police barrel because the guy wanted one with rifle sights and this on had bead for $125 shipped.

I like the 20", so I could use the +3 extension without the tube sticking out.

i would personally prefer a 'time period' Remington replacement barrel for an older Wingmaster. you can find one from the online auctions easy enough. ebay and Gunbroker are good sites to find a barrel.
