I bought a Winchester Super-X Pump, and put over 500 2-3/4" shells through it without a problem. Then I took it duck hunting, along with a box of Remington 3-inch Hi-Speed Steel shells. Upon firing, each shell jammed in the ejection port, so that I would have to dig it out with my fingernails. The port wasn't quite long enough, in spite of the gun being sold as, and marked, 3".
The Winchester phone rep said I could send it in for evaluation, but suggested that I try another brand of shells first. So today, I shot some trap with it using the Remington, and also some 3" Kent Fasteel and 3" Winchester Drylok Super Steel. Every Remington jammed, every Winchester ejected, and the Kent would jam about once in 5 shots. I kept a number of the empty shells, and measured them when I got home. The opened length of 7 Remingtons ranged from 3.014" to 3.033". 18 Kents ranged from 2.938" to 2.953". 11 Winchesters ranged from 2.933" to 2.951".
By re-inserting and ejecting the Rem shells, I can see that they are hanging up on the barrel itself, not the opening of the receiver, so it wouldn't help to shave some metal from the receiver's port.
It irks me that the gun can't shoot just any 3" ammo on the shelf. I would like to send it in to Winchester to fix, but it looks like a fundamental design error. Do you think they would be able to fix this? Or am I likely to be stuck with a small selection of loads that are compatible with the gun?
