Question on Mossberg 500

I'm going to order Mossberg 500 (http://www.impactguns.com/mossberg-m...813514828.aspx), and bring it to CA from GA. Is this shotgun legal in CA? I've heard that pistol grip in assault rifles and shotguns are illegal in CA. If it's legal, then what's the legal way to bring it to CA through Delta Airline?

If your going to fly back to California, just call Delta. They will tell you how to proceed.
Usually there is a seperate room they check the firearm in. Verify its unloaded and no ammo with it. They tag it, you put it in a locked case, I wrap Duct tape around the case
and they put it in with checked luggage. So I can tell if its been messed with.
Depending on where you fly into, they will have a procedure as well. it veries from state to state, airline to airline.

its just a pump action shotgun. Nothing illegal about it even with the pistol grip. if the gun is configured correctly ( when/if applicable) the poistol grip is inconsequential to the legality of the shotgun or rifle.
For example your shotgun is a pump action so you can do whatever you want to it with the exception of having a less than 18 inch barrel. having a pistol grip or side saddle or hell even a detachable magazine doesn't matter. its a pump action not a semi auto.
No you do not need to notify the DOJ. BTW you can buy the same shotgun here also for less.

I purchased a Mossberg 500 in CA, from Big 5 Actually (picked it up for $299.99). Its a 12 Gauge 20' Barrel. Pretty sweet home protection gun. Holds 8 rounds +1 in the chamber. I'm a new to this so correct me if I'm wrong guys.

The duct tape is a good idea, gonna do that when I fly next. Thanks for the tip!

From San Diego to Detroit, they had me open it to put the unloaded declaration in the case (didn't check to see if they were unloaded, just asked). Then they walked me to the TSA checker who swabbed the case and then told me I didn't need to open it again.

From Detroit back to San Diego, they had me open it and the TSA machine was right by the checkout. They called TSA over to swab it and then told me I was good to go.

I flew Delta as well and it was relatively painless. Just make sure you have a hard case with non-TSA locks. Only you should be able to open it. Bring an extra set of locks in case they decide to cut them. It's probably a great rarity for that to happen but you can't fly with it if the locks are cut.

They have an ammo restriction as well. The information is available online at their website or you can call.
