Between the two, I'd recommend the 930 SPX without the pistol grip. You're very lucky to even find one IMHO. They are pretty much sold out everywhere.

Semi-auto's are far faster than pumps. As anyone that shoots 3-gun. They are just as reliable as pumps if 3-gun matches are any indication of reliability. And as previously mentioned, the pistol grip version (Blackwater) makes it difficult to reach the safety.

As a novice gun owner...with only a small caliber handgun...who is contemplating the same 930 SPX/pistol grip stock shotgun, can someone enlighten me as to the real world issue with the tang safety and pistol grip stock?

I picture going to the range...and flicking the safety 0.5 sec prior to a range exercise, doesn't seem much of an issue?

For home defense, if I had to pick up the gun, wouldn't you just flick the safety first, as you are in the initial motion of arming yourself?

Why do you need to be able to reach both safety and trigger at the same time?

Or is it just an ergonomic thing, in-a-perfect-world kind of thing?

Hope it doesn't start a flame war, just asking cuz I'm new to this

      Thanks!

Its all ergos. The tang safety is just not ideal to operate with a PG stock. People don't ever want their finger off that trigger.

As a matter of tactics and survival, you never want to have to remove your trigger hand from the pistol grip - even partially. When a split second means the difference between life and death, you don't want to lag behind. Your support hand can do whatever it wants. Just keep that trigger finger near that trigger. If the safety were on the trigger guard like some shotguns, it would be a moot point. But unfortunately the Mossberg uses a tang safety.

I LOVE my 930SPX with the factory pistol grip. I just use my support hand to actuate the safety, it's no big deal to me. I would buy another 930 with the pistol grip in a heartbeat.

IIRC, I was just over $800 with tax and dros on my 930 a year ago, and I just saw one at my local dealer. $850.
