20g home defense rounds?

Do they make something? I don't know squat and all I have is a case of federal value pack bought at walmart. I believe it's 7/8oz shot. Yesterday I was going to work when the road was closed down about 1/2 mile from me. The officer told me there was an accident and a manhunt. So I called my job and locked up my cars outside. Grabbed my 357 and let the hounds out to patrol the area while I locked up my car and put away shovels that were laying around. The dogs and I went inside and that's when I noticed I'm lacking some proper ammo for this gun. Is this stuff birdshot?

A man was wounded by gunfire Thursday in a rural area near the northeastern reaches of Camp Pendleton.

The shooting in Fallbrook was reported according to sheriff's officials.

10News learned the man was shot and found injured near his vehicle. The wounded man flagged down a passing motorist, who gave him a ride to a hospital, a dispatcher said.

California Highway Patrol officials believe the suspected shooter carjacked another vehicle and drove to Temecula. There, CHP officials said the suspected shooter abandoned the vehicle and set it on fire near Rancho California and Sycamore Mesa roads.

The victim's condition was unavailable as of 7 p.m.

The person suspected in the shooting remains at large.

I lived there for 10 years, and only moved out about 2 years ago. I never saw any of Tom Metzger or his minions. I think they all moved on long ago. It is mostly marine families, old people, and a large community of illegal aliens. They have a bit of a gang problem, but that is about it.

i live in a crowded neighborhood, have my parents room to my right, and my sisters room to my left. Because penetration is a concern, i stick to birdshot. Make no mistake, at the distances i have in my house, birdshot will ruin somones day.

If you live by yourself in a more rural neighborhood, where penetration isnt a huge concern, stick with buck shot.

It really comes down to your personal situation.

Firstly, yes the federal value pack stuff you got at Wal-Mart is birdshot. It's a 7/8 oz load of number 8 or 7.5 shot.

Secondly, you're going to get a lot of opinions on efficacy of birdshot or buckshot for self defense and over penetration issues. #4 buck penetrates about 11.5 inches of ballistic gel, just falling short of the FBI minimum recommended penetration into ballistic gel for a defensive round. According to the box o' truth (http://www.theboxotruth.com/docs/bot3.htm) #4 buck will go through 6 sheets of drywall (not including insulation, 2x4s, etc). I would wager that #4 buck is less than lethal after two - four sheets of just drywall, so I think (that is, I'm guessing) you would not likely kill a bystander unless you accidentally shot them in the same room. Birdshot on the other hand has about two inches of penetration into ballistic gel and penetrates 2 layers of drywall, not enough to be lethal with most shot placements.

Personally, I feel comfortable with #4 buck in a small apartment in a complex, 00 when I'm in a bigger place with fewer people around.

My uncle tells of using birdshot on some protesters in People's Park during his very brief National Guard tenure; he said they didn't seem terribly hurt by it. That's a story to take with a big grain of salt, as most of his stories are, but I've always wondered how true it is.

Massad Ayoob had a very strong recommendation some years ago for the 20 gauge as a defensive round, particularly because he felt the recoil was significantly less without losing much effectiveness from the 12 gauge. It was in his Stressfire Volume 2. Good book.

This is what we use for my wife's 20ga. #3 Buck is a little bigger than #4 Buck, the Remington Express pattern tightest in our guns, save Federal Flight Control wad rounds, but I don't think they make the Flight Control stuff in 20.
