    maintenance for older 870

I just got a 870 Wingmaster that my dad purchased back in 1954. I shot a bunch of trap the other day and it shoots great. Is there any special maintenance I should do to it to make sure it continue to shoot good and I won't get any suprises when i take it out hunting?

Clean it once in a while. Wipe it down when you're done handling it. Don't store it with excessive amounts of oil on it (unless you want to store it muzzle down). I store my classic guns in a sackups silicone trated gun sock. Keeps them from getting scratched in the safe and saves them from salt-air rust (when I go duck hunting).

Take the choke out, wipe clean, and put a bit of oil on it every now and again.
      (if so equipped)

I spray a rag with RemOil, them wipe down the gun.

Spray chamber, and wipe away excess.

Once a year, or once a rain, I'll clean and oil the magazine spring.

in effort to reduce the potential for rust formation on the shotgun's metal surface, do not keep shotgun in a case or rug for long term storage; store in a safe with GoldenRod or other dehumidifier device.

when storing, ensure that your bare finger is not the last thing to touch the shotgun's metal. i've seen many otherwise wonderfully finished vintage weapons with a clear fingerprint permanently smudged on the metal finish.

when your shotgun is in long term storage, don't forget about it; check on it's condition at regular intervals.

There a couple upgrade springs that Aippi suggested
but if the gun is functioning fine and your dont have a desire to replace any parts you should be fine

Install a new Firing Pin Retractor Spring and a new Extractor Spring.
