I am no expert but I think just the barrel ,chamber and action/Recevier are different everything else is the same
Laws that forbid the carrying of arms... disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes... Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man. Jefferson's "Commonplace Book," 1774_1776, quoting from On Crimes and Punishment, by criminologist Cesare Beccaria, 1764

No they are not the same.

The 12 gauge forend will not fit a 20 gauge barrel without some sort of sleeve or adaptor.

Correct. There are very few accessories for the 20ga 870. And even some that have been around are now history. Choate makes a short LE type forend for the 870 and I believe Midway USA or Brownell has them, can't remember which. You can see what it looks like on the 20ga Model on my web site. Other then that there are some cheap options that use spacers for different models but they are or no quality and I would never use them on a weapon.
