need a recommendation

I'm looking for cheap small game hunting shotgun . this will be my first .

I'm thinking 16ga or 20ga not sure which . have to dig little more

looking for pump action and barrel option for different chokes .

Go look at some ammo prices, that will eliminate 16ga (unless you plan on reloading?). When you say small game, you mean rabbits and squirrels or birds or all of the above?

Can't go wrong with the ever popular Mossberg 500 or a Remington 870. There are no-name Chinese knock offs of both on the market for less but they generally aren't going to be built as well or have the rep.

last time ( month ago ) when i was at walmart . 12ga bird shot ( 5, 6 ) were going about bucks . same for 16ga

are there any cheaper models than 500 or 870 ? possibly under 230 inlcuding tax &dro

You should be able to find a used pump shotgun for $ 200. Check the pawn shops.

16ga is more or less dead (or at least dying).

I picked up a Rem 870 20ga for $300, and I love it.

I would look at picking up something used in 20gauge

locating 16gauge ammo is challenging on a local sense and is expensive compared to 12&20

think I've found a cheaper way to hunt . my brother has remington 870 12ga ( fixed cylinder ) . and just buy an another barrel for it to hunt .

my question is .. does aftermarket companies out there sells full choked barrel for 870 ?
or do I have to buy a threaded barrel and install choke ?

Firstly, 16 gauge isn't dead or dying. There is plenty of ammo. Ordering gives you more choices but since I bought a 16, I've been finding ammo in places I never thought I would find it (wal-mart, etc.), I just never looked for it before so I never saw it.

Secondly, both 16 and 20 gauge will be more expensive and harder to find in general than 12 gauge.

Thirdly, I'm not a fan of the Remington Express 870s. The wingmasters yes, the express version no. I've been having issues with a recently purchased one myself.

Fourthly, Carlson's makes choke tubes and aftermarket barrels for the 870. Generally they are less expensive than the remington barrels. Check that out as an option as well.
